Hey, it’s international women’s day! And this is a great film to discuss in celebration. Easily passes the Bechdel test, plus I think the female main characters actually outnumber the male? Definitely their dialogue outnumbers.
Okay, discussion questions! Which I will be bringing up on Zoom, and then passing on the results
Do you buy the love story, the suddenness of it?
Generally response, NO! They are alone in a cabin and all of a sudden in love?
Shammi in this role: equal to Shashi? Or, even, SUPERIOR to Shashi?
General response, NEVER! There are brief flashes of Shashi-ness when he gets serious and sincere, but no TRUE Shashitude. This also lead into a hot debate about whether Shammi could ever be called “sexy”.
What is the magic balance of things that matter and don’t matter? It’s a farce, but it includes real danger, real pregnancy, etc. etc. Like, stuff that would have made it a drama in another era, but it’s just farce here? How does that work?
Everyone generally agreed this is the fascinating part. It takes these topics that should be taboo and serious, and they are just laughed at, and somehow the film works.
Okay, next discussion! Either:
Manoranjan, on Netflix, super pleasant, Zeenat Aman, Sanjeev Kumar, another farce about a serious subject somehow handled just right.
Kuch Naa Kaho, only on Einthusan, hidden gem of a light early 2000s rom-com.
Crew, releasing in theaters March 29th, we would all have to watch it first weekend to make the discussion work.
What are y’all thinking?
