Future Islands have returned with “The Fight,” the latest single from their forthcoming album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore.
Built around a down-tempo beat, “The Fight” is colored by an ethereal synth soundscape of hazy chords and glistening counter-melodies. Underneath, a deep, steady bass line holds down the bottom end, while overtop, the band’s Sam Herring delivers the kind of impassioned performance that only he can provide, singing fiery lines about self-preservation. “I won’t fade away,” the chorus goes. “I will face every day/ As if it’s my last one/ And I will keep you safe/ Just like our past was/ Fight for love every day.”
“The Fight” also arrives with an animated music video, matching the tonality of the song with abstract depictions of a dark-haired figure in red. Watch it below.
Last month, Future Islands confirmed that their seventh studio album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore, will arrive on January 26th (with pre-orders ongoing). Along with that announcement, they shared the single, “The Tower.” Earlier in the year, they shared the single “Deep in the Night.”
Meanwhile, Herring recently made his acting debut, appearing as William Wheeler in the Apple TV+ series, The Challenging. This past April, he teamed up with billy woods for the single “FaceTime.”
