Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes would like to see Olivia Pope return, even if it happens on a different show. One of the hottest dramas of its time, the ABC series Scandal was anchored by Kerry Washington’s commanding performance as the professional fixer Olivia Pope. Though her personal life was a mess, including a love affair with the President of the United States, she was always capable of assembling her team of gladiators to handle a situation. Through twists and turns, that premise played out for seven seasons and 124 episodes.
During a sitdown with IMDb, while promoting her Netflix series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Rhimes was asked which of her characters would she like to revive.
Since its conclusion in 2018, there hasn’t been a lot of discussion about rebooting or reviving Scandal. When asked about the possibility to have one of her characters return, Rhimes doesn’t hesitate in her reply and explains why she would choose Pope:
“Olivia Pope, I like that character so much. Even when she was bad, I liked that character so much — she’s very interesting.”
Olivia Pope Already Has An Awesome Shondaland Crossover
Viewers of the Shonda Rhimes universe will remember that Olivia Pope already had a canon-breaking, excellent crossover with How to Get Away with Murder, Olivia teams up with Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) to work up a class action lawsuit regarding the mass incarceration of black people in the United States.
How To Get Away With Murder is created by Peter Nowalk, though Rhimes is an executive producer. The crossover also breaks the reality of the Viola Davis legal thriller. Previously, How to Get Away with Murder had made references to real-life presidents like Obama. Of course, in the Scandal world, the president is Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). Still, the canon mix-up is well worth it. The crossover allows for Washington and Davis to share the screen, with their very different characters confronting each other on colorism and classism but still powerfully supporting one another.
Given that continuity is not a determining factor, Washington could appear as Olivia in the Shonda Rhimes-created Grey’s Anatomy as a patient or to consult. Perhaps there’s even another show where the memorable character can have a bit of a Scandal reprisal. For the many that enjoyed the series, it would be a very popular cameo.
