Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Sana Starros #3 Luke Skywalker’s fight with the Rancor is perhaps one of the most entertaining in all of Star Wars, as the series’ hero is going toe-to-toe with a monstrous beast meant only for carrying out Jabba the Hutt’s brutal (and usually unfair) executions. While Luke ended up defeating the Rancor, one Star Wars character confirms that he could have done so in a much easier (and less violent) way.
In Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker infiltrates the palace of Jabba the Hutt to discuss Jabba’s surrender of Luke’s friend and partner, Han Solo. In the previous film, Han Solo was frozen in carbonite by Boba Fett and delivered to Jabba the Hutt, as Han owed Jabba a large sum of money. However, that was of no concern to Luke Skywalker, and he wasn’t leaving the palace without his friend. Though Jabba had other plans. Jabba the Hutt opened up a trap door under Luke’s feet as the two were talking, dropping Luke into the pit of the Rancor. After evading the hulking beast for some time, Luke was able to beat the creature by closing the Rancor’s spiked gate on top of it, impaling the beast and killing it almost instantly. It was a brutal path to victory, but a victory nonetheless. However, it seems as though killing the Rancor was completely unnecessary.
Star Wars Reveals the Non-Violent (Yet Really Gross) Way to Beat a Rancor
In Star Wars: Sana Starros #3 by Justina Ireland and Pere Pérez, Sana Starros of the prominent Starros family is called to a mission that involves stealing a Rancor from a breeder and exotic animal trader. A syndicate wanted this job done for personal reasons, and Sana made that happen so the syndicate could be called upon to help her with something later. Classic quid pro quo scenario. As interesting as the complexities of these interwoven storylines proved to be (especially given how under the radar this corner of the Star Wars galaxy is), the most notable aspect of the mission is the theft of the Rancor itself. To keep the beast from attacking her upon releasing it from its cage, Sana poured a vial of juvenile Rancor urine all over herself. When the Rancor sniffed her, it thought she was one of its young, and allowed Sana to ride on its back to freedom.
When Luke Skywalker and the other members of his crew infiltrated Jabba’s palace in Episode VI, a lot of time and thought went into how they were going to bust Han out of there. Intricate planning and preliminary infiltration went into this jailbreak, which means Luke should have been fully prepared for the possibility that he’d be going toe-to-toe with Jabba’s Rancor. Therefore, it isn’t a stretch to consider that Luke could have gotten ahold of Rancor urine before the mission, and could have doused himself in it before confronting Jabba, just to be safe. Sure, he would have stank like Rancor pee, but he would have been completely immune to the Rancor if he did so, as the creature would have treated Luke like its own child.
While the scene would have been less exciting, as it would have robbed fans of this fun ‘Jedi vs Space Monster’ battle in the final episode of the original Star Wars trilogy, Luke Skywalker could have had a much easier time against the Rancor if he had just done what Sana Starros did in this issue and covered himself in its urine.
