A new trailer for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny offers the best look yet at the titular artifact. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sees Harrison Ford returning for one last adventure as the whip-wielding archeologist alongside a cast that includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas. Ford v Ferrari and Logan director James Mangold is at the helm of the new sequel, taking the reins from Steven Spielberg, who remains attached as an executive producer.
Lucasfilm shared a new trailer on YouTube for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, offering a close-up look at the artifact that drive’s the film’s plot.
The trailer delves into the lore surrounding the titular Dial of Destiny, and as with most artifacts in the Indiana Jones franchise, it comes with a colorful backstory. And the Dial’s importance to the plot is clearly stated as it changes hands, with both sides wanting possession of the artifact.
What The Dial Of Destiny Means For Indiana Jones
Throughout his time hunting for long-lost relics around the world, Indiana Jones has encountered several that are imbued with special abilities. For example, Raiders of the Lost Ark saw The Ark of the Covenant opened, only for ghost-like spirits to swirl, melting the Nazis who dared to lift its lid. Furthermore, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade featured the Holy Grail, which carried the power to heal wounds. And Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull introduced interdimensional beings, or aliens, whose crystal skulls carried power.
So with Indiana Jones surrounded by treasures with distinct, often supernatural attributes, the Dial of Destiny is set to be the same. While certain details about Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny are still under wraps, the film has shared that the artifact has the power to “change the course of history.” In addition, with the de-aged Ford, possible flashbacks, and the prominence of Nazis despite being set in the 1960s, the clues point toward the Dial of Destiny being a time travel device.
Given that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull hinged on aliens, the franchise has already proven its willingness to dabble with world-altering events. Some may see it as a stretch if the Dial of Destiny allows for time travel, but the franchise has thrived on otherworldly plot points since its first outing. So it’s possible that Indiana Jones will be traveling through time, potentially changing events or stopping Nazis from altering history with the Dial of Destiny. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will reveal its secrets when it hits theaters on June 30.
