A major dungeon set aboard a gigantic derelict airship, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Wind Temple is an actual test of players’ combat, platforming, and puzzle-solving skills. To progress through the Wind Temple, players must find and activate five turbines to unlock a sealed chamber, all while battling hostile enemies and freezing temperatures.
After arriving in Rito Village and meeting Tulin in Zelda: TOTK, an old friend from Breath of the Wild, Link is tasked with investigating the cause of a giant snowstorm engulfing the region. With Tulin’s help, players must complete a challenging climb into the clouds to find the Wind Temple. Naturally, players must be well-prepared before setting out on this journey.
How To Prepare For The Wind Temple
Cold Resistance is absolutely essential; players will need two tiers of Cold Resistance just to survive outdoors in the Wind Temple. Players can create fire in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom using Flint and Wood, which is a great way to get warm in a pinch. However, to properly explore, Link will need to wear armor or eat meals that offer Cold Resistance.
Luckily for players, the shop in Rito Village sells the Snowquill Tunic and Snowquill Trousers, which offer one tier of Cold Resistance each. This makes the Snowquill set an easy recommendation, as long as players have enough Rupees to purchase them. Any armor pieces with the Cold Resistance trait will work, but players will need two pieces to fight off the cold.
Cooking meals with Cold Resistance is also highly recommended. Combining other ingredients with Spicy Peppers is the easiest way to cook dishes that offer Cold Resistance. Meals also have the added bonus of restoring Link’s health and stamina. However, Cold Resistance from meals is temporary, so players must stock up on the right ingredients.
Once players reach the Wind Temple, they’ll have to track down the locks to open the chamber containing the source of the blizzard. These turbine locks will be marked on players’ maps, but it can be tricky to get them working. Here’s how to find each turbine, from north to south.
How To Find The First Wind Temple Turbine Lock
Link starts in the middle of the Wind Temple, where a powerful wind tunnel emerges from behind the sealed chamber hatch. Jump into the wind, deploy Link’s glider, and glide north towards the tower at the front of the ship.
At the top, players will find a set of stone doors. Use Ultrahand to open them to reveal a pit with a turbine at the bottom and a grid of lasers. Players must drop into the pit, diving and redeploying Link’s glider to avoid the lasers.
Just below the laser grid, players will find the first turbine in a small alcove on the north wall of the pit. Use Tulin’s Gust ability to activate it.
Players can also find another alcove in the south wall of the pit, which contains a chest with a Zonai Soldier Blade.
Glide back up to the main deck.
How To Find The Second Wind Temple Turbine Lock
Head north from the sealed chamber hatch towards the front of the ship, staying on the same floor. Link will come across two rooms locked behind gates.
The second turbine is found in the room on the right. To open the gate, snap off a nearby icicle and attach it to the lever by the door using Ultrahand.
Link can then grab the icicle and pull the lever. Finally, use Tulin’s Gust ability to activate the turbine.
Players can also open the room directly opposite. This contains a hostile Construct and a chest with a rare Opal.
How To Find The Third Wind Temple Turbine Lock
Jump off the eastern side of the ship at the point shown on the map above and deploy Link’s glider.
Players should be able to spot a hole in the ship blocked off by icicles. Land here and break the icicles to get back inside the ship.
Watch out for the ship cannon here. Every so often, it will shoot at Link, so make sure to evade it or stay out of its line of sight.
To the left, Link will find a chest locked behind iron bars. To grab it, players will need to get creative with Ultrahand. First, break off and grab some extra icicles, attaching them together using Ultrahand to create a long line.
Use Ultrahand to guide the icicles through the gap in the bars, attaching the chest to the end of the line. Then, pull the icicles (with the chest attached) back through the bars and unlock them to grab a rare Sapphire.
To find the third turbine, head to the right and cast Recall on the spinning wheel to enter another room. Defeat the Construct here and focus on the two sets of gears on the left wall.
Break off another icicle and attach it to both gears using Ultrahand, as shown above.
Connecting the gears will make them move in tandem, opening the gate and allowing Link and Tulin to access the third turbine. Use Gust to activate it.
For an easy exit, attach an icicle to the lever opposite the turbine room and pull it to open the gate in the wall.
How To Find The Fourth Wind Temple Turbine Lock
Jump off the western side of the ship and deploy Link’s glider. Players should be able to spot two holes in the side of the ship. Land at the one closest to the front of the ship and head inside.
To the left is another Construct and a chest behind another laser grid. Defeat the Construct, navigate around the lasers, and pop open the chest to find a Ruby.
To the right, players will find a gap in the floor. To cross it, deploy Link’s glider and use Tulin’s Gust to glide across.
Defeat the Construct here and use Link’s new Ascend ability to go up a floor. Players can find a hidden chest containing a Captain I Reaper weapon by using Ultrahand to move two stone slabs. This is good practice for later.
Head further into the ship to find a pole linked to a gear in the ceiling and a ladder leading up to a sealed gate. To open the gate, grab the nearby stone slabs using Ultrahand and attach them to the pole, as shown above, to create a makeshift windmill. Players will need to attach a total of four slabs to complete it.
Use Tulin’s Gust to spin the windmill, then climb up the ladder and enter the room behind it. Defeat the Construct and use Gust to activate the fourth turbine.
How To Find The Fifth Wind Temple Turbine Lock
The final Wind Temple turbine is located on the bottom of the ship. Jump off either side of the ship and use a brief dive to get just below the ship. Deploy Link’s glider and glide over to the platform here.
Defeat the Construct and activate the turbine.
Return to the sealed chamber hatch on the main deck of the ship. With all five turbines running, the Wind Temple’s main puzzle is complete, and the sealed chamber leading to the heart of the blizzard can be opened.
However, players will want to prep their best weapon fusions in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as the Wind Temple has one more surprise in store: a boss battle against the fearsome Colgera.
