It’s later revealed that he has a second home across the street from where he lives where he disposes of his victims.
The fact that he hides the boys’ bodies in the basement of another home suggests a shame so deep that he can’t even live in the same place as his victims’ corpses. That his mask is utilized more to cover The Grabber’s own shame than his identity is shown explicitly during his final confrontation with Finney at the end of The Black Phone. While stuck in the hole Finney has dug and struggling to fight the 13-year-old, The Grabber appears to start gaining the upper hand again until Finney unmasks him.
He panics, shielding his face and screaming, allowing Finney to wrap the Black Phone’s cord around his neck, using it to snap his neck. Finney has seen both the upper and lower parts of his face at this point, as well as seeing him fully unmasked when The Grabber abducted him. His panic at being unmasked shows that the mask isn’t truly being worn for Finney’s benefit, but for his own.
The Grabber’s Mask Looks Set To Become An Iconic Horror Look
Throughout the decades, masks and horror have gone hand in hand, and the Grabber’s visage will definitely be cropping up in Halloween stores for years to come. Every good popular horror villain seems to wear a mask of some sort. Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Leatherface masks have all been staples for Horror Cosplayers and trick-or-treaters for decades. Yet as simple as it is, The Grabber mask is undeniably creepy just to look at and becoming a popular Halloween choice is one sure sign of The Black Phone‘s villain becoming a true horror icon.
