A Star Wars fan’s cosplay inspired by Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace brings the Sith Lord’s dangerous weapon to life.
A cosplayer has brought Darth Maul and his fearsome double-bladed lightsaber from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace to life. Despite limited screentime and having just a handful of lines before being temporarily killed, Maul became an icon when the first installment in the prequel trilogy released in 1999. George Lucas recognized the mistake in killing Maul and resurrected him for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the former Sith Lord on to have one of the most compelling stories in the franchise until his demise in Star Wars Rebels.
Cosplay Society Magazine shared via Twitter a cosplayer’s stunning interpretation of Darth Maul from The Phantom Menace.
The cosplayer’s makeup and prosthetics are incredible applications of the look that made Maul iconic. What seals the deal is the lightsaber, a high-quality replicant of the warrior’s first weapon that dazzles when shining in smoke.
Will Darth Maul Return To Live-Action Star Wars?
It’s hard to look at such an impressive cosplay feat and not yearn for Maul’s return to Star Wars in live-action. Though he made a brief cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, the best of Maul’s tale was told in animation. With Star Wars making such a heavy push into the live-action space though, now is the best time to bring the former Sith Lord back into the fold.
One massive hole in Maul’s story remains untold: his time between Solo and how he ends up stranded on Malachor in Rebels. At some point during the Dark Times, all of the control Maul amassed as a crime lord slipped from his grasp, and there’s a hint of fear in his voice when he mentions Darth Vader. Is there potential for a conflict between the two?
The other option is to go back in time and establish Darth Maul’s roots. Save for a comic, no stories have been told in the canon about Maul’s time as a Sith apprentice to Darth Sidious. A live-action series following Maul as he executes his master’s plans in the shadows before The Phantom Menace would make way for a fascinating look at their relationship and reveal more about the Sith.
