American Idol Top 3 finalist Colin Stough has released a single, “I Still Talk to Jesus,” and it has the potential to be a huge hit for the country crooner. Colin is an 18-year-old HVAC technician from a little town outside of Amory, Mississippi. He auditioned for AI when his mom signed him up, knowing that he would never do it himself. He sang “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and blew away the judges (Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan) with his incredible vocals and guitar playing.
Throughout American Idol season 21, Colin continued to impress with his country versions of popular songs. He sang “Midnight Train to Memphis” by the SteelDrivers (Top 26), “Pretty Heart” by Parker McCollum (Top 20), “Midnight Rider” by The Allman Brothers (Top 12), “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn (Top 12 Celebration Song), “It’s Been Awhile” by Staind (Top 10), and “Hand in My Pocket” by Alanis Morissette (Top 8). He also wowed everyone with his American Idol Top 5 Disney Night performances of “Real Gone” from Cars and “Nobody Knows” from Pete’s Dragon. Now, Colin’s single, “I Still Talk to Jesus,” will most likely be a massive hit for him.
“I Still Talk to Jesus ” Is A Beautiful Country Song
American Idol viewers are country music fans, as evidenced by their votes for finalists in the country genre and their love for their songs. “I Still Talk to Jesus” is an emotional country ballad about a young man who talks to Jesus, as he deals with a breakup with his girlfriend. In an Instagram post, Colin said of the song, “It can be really hard to find people you can talk to and this song is a reminder that you will always have that one source who is always with you.”
Written by American Idol season 18 finalist Francisco Martin and Hank Compton, and produced by Chris DeStefano, “I Still Talk to Jesus” is a beautiful song with relatable themes. Because of this, it will skyrocket up the charts. Last year, winner Noah Thompson’s country song “One Day Tonight” reached number one on the music charts. Runner-up HunterGirl’s “Red Bird,” which was also a country tune, climbed the charts as well. In addition, the successful careers of American Idol country artists such as Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, and Gabby Barrett are a great indication that Colin’s song could do very well.
Colin Stough’s Voice Has Never Sounded Better
Throughout American Idol, Colin has grown as an artist. He came into the show with no prior performing experience, but only incredible raw talent. In “I Still Talk to Jesus,” Colin has never sounded better. His high notes soar, alternating between falsetto and belting. Colin hasn’t used much falsetto on the show, but his tone is gorgeous in this song. His voice sounds just as authentic recorded as it does live.
Colin’s new single “I Still Talk to Jesus” will be a hit for the country singer. With its beautiful melody and powerful lyrics, it has all of the elements of a classic song. Colin has come so far on American Idol season 21, and “I Still Talk to Jesus” will be another great achievement for him.
The American Idol finale airs Sunday, May 21 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
