Twin brothers Jason and Brett Oppenheim were introduced on Selling Sunset season 1 during the first episode, but Brett is noticeably absent often. Brett is increasingly fading into the background of the hit Netflix reality TV show. Where in earlier seasons it was difficult to tell whether Jason or Brett appeared in Selling Sunset scenes, it’s safe to say in Selling Sunset season 6, the featured Oppenheim brother is Jason. A few episodes into the new season, many are wondering where Brett is.
Brett and Jason had similar career paths. Both went to UC Berkeley for their undergraduate degrees and went to law school, albeit Brett at UCLA and Jason at UC Berkeley. However, both detested the 9 to 5 lifestyle and, taking over five generations of real estate business; the brothers replaced their great-great-grandfather’s Stearn Realty Company with the Oppenheim Group. By the time later Selling Sunset seasons aired, Jason appeared to be the primary broker at the O Group. Brett seems more absent from their original venture, especially in Selling Sunset season 6.
Brett Oppenheim Started His Own Brokerage
According to former Oppenheim Group realtor Christine Quinn via Women’s Health, Brett left the O Group in 2020 to start his real estate brokerage, similarly named Oppenheim Real Estate. The only face featured on the website is Brett’s. He claims a similar story to the Oppenheim Group’s; that the company is descended from their great-great-grandfather Jacob Stern and that the brokerage is featured on Netflix’s Selling Sunset. He also notes his connection to Selling Sunset OC. However, his ties to his brokerage and distance from Oppenheim Group explain Brett’s absence from the show in later seasons.
Brett Oppenheim Doesn’t Bring The Drama On Selling Sunset
Additionally, Brett doesn’t have the salacious drama in his life that Jason does. The more visible Oppenheim brother has dated multiple women in the office, including Mary Fitzgerald, Nicole Young, and most recently, Chrishell Stause. Chrishell and Jason’s romance and fallout were one of the main storylines in Selling Sunset season 5. Jason wanted to marry Chrishell but didn’t want to have children, which was a dealbreaker for the former soap opera star. In Selling Sunset season 6, Jason debuted a new girlfriend, a 25-year-old German model named Mary-Lou Nurk, with whom he now claims to be in love. Brett doesn’t exude the same drama as Jason.
While Jason’s personal life has been front-page news since Selling Sunset debuted, Brett is a little more private. According to People, Brett and his ex-girlfriend, Tina Louise, broke up in 2021, but he’s been dating German tattoo artist Samantha Abdul since August 2022. The two are happy, and Samantha already has a child and isn’t planning on more which “takes the pressure off” the relationship. Although Brett hasn’t posted photos of Samantha on his Instagram, there’s no reason to believe the pair have broken up.
Brett appears meaningfully in only one scene of Selling Sunset season 6, and it’s hilarious. Jason returned from his three-week vacation in which the office completely disintegrated into drama, only to be scolded by Selling Sunset realtor Emma Hernan for blowing their deal. Not feeling the warmth of a welcome back, he insisted it could be saved and was left grumbling when Emma blamed his absence for the deal’s demise.
Brett stood next to Jason and simply agreed with everything Emma said, and Jason, clearly irritated, told him he wasn’t being helpful. The other half of the Oppenheim brothers spoke less than a sentence in the entire interaction and completely stole the scene. The difficulty of working with one’s twin contributed to Brett’s departure, but they are used to bickering. In fact, the location was a reminder of how enjoyable it is when Brett and Jason can’t help but quibble on camera.
Brett’s relative absence on Selling Sunset season 6 is likely two-fold. First, Brett brings less drama to the explosive Netflix reality TV series and always has. Secondly, and more importantly, Brett left the Oppenheim Group in 2020 to start his own brokerage, Oppenheim Real Estate. Although it’s unclear how direct the competition is between the brothers’ brokerages, he has enough on his plate with his business. He isn’t as directly involved with Selling Sunset anymore.
Selling Sunset season 6 is now streaming on Netflix.
