Warning: This post contains MAJOR spoilers for Fast X
Fast X ends on a major cliffhanger, and the final moments set up what’s yet to come in Fast & Furious 11. The gang’s back together in Fast X, though they spend the majority of the film separated. The tenth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise introduces a new villain, reaching back into the past to Fast Five and bringing Hernan Reyes’s son, Dante, to the forefront of the spectacle.
The end of Fast X brings betrayals, death, and perilous situations to Dom and his family. Letty and Cipher have just escaped the black site prison in Antarctica, only to be picked up by Gisele, who returns to the Fast franchise after being presumed dead; Roman, Tej, Han, and Ramsey’s plane is shot down, Dom and Little Brian are standing on a dam in Portugal that is about to explode, Aimes is revealed to have been working with Dante all along, and Jakob sacrifices his life so that Dom can save his son. It seems like Dante has beat Dom — for now.
What Dante Reyes’ Plan Was In Fast X
Dante certainly wanted revenge on Dom Toretto for being a part of the heist that ultimately killed his father in Fast Five, but he wanted to make sure Dom was left without money, freedom, and family. It wasn’t just about threatening him or his family, he wanted to watch Dom truly suffer. Dante separated Dom’s family, weakening them, drained their bank accounts and paid mercenaries to go after the family and everyone who has ever worked with them, and put them all on the most-wanted list. In short, Dante wanted to gloat about winning and being so many steps ahead of Dom before ending his life.
Jakob’s Death In Fast X Explained
Jakob sacrifices his life at the end of Fast X to ensure Dom could save Little Brian from Dante. Jakob used his vehicle’s severed fuel line to set his car on fire, driving over a rail and into a group of Dante’s men’s cars, with the crash blowing up all involved. Jakob feels it’s his moment to step up and out of Dom’s shadow, and his decision is a selfless one that allows Dom to continue protecting his son. Of course, Jakob is holding Dom’s cross necklace right before he drives his car into the others, so it’s possible Fast & Furious 11 will reveal he survived the explosion somehow.
Where Is Mr. Nobody & Why Is He Missing?
Tess, Mr. Nobody’s daughter, reveals that her father is missing. Fast X keeps his whereabouts a mystery, and there’s no explanation regarding why he’s missing and how that happened. It’s possible Dante planned for Mr. Nobody’s disappearance all along. After all, Aimes was revealed to have been working with Dante all along, so it’s likely they plotted to have Mr. Nobody removed so that Aimes could become leader and call the shots. If Mr. Nobody was in charge, he would have backed Dom and his crew. Mr. Nobody being missing during Fast X explains Kurt Russell’s absence, and given the cliffhanger ending, it’s possible he will return in the sequel.
Why Aimes & The Agency Betrayed Dom In Fast X
Aimes’ betrayal is layered. Aimes drops Dom and his family after they’re labeled terrorists following Dante’s attempts to bomb Rome. Aimes believes the agency’s connection to Dom would put a target on their backs, and he couldn’t risk the agency being outed. Aimes pretends to team up with Dom later, realizing that they were set up by Dante, only to betray him again in a twist that suggests that not everyone can become family. Aimes also turned his back on the agency because of his partnership with Dante, which began ten years prior to the start of Fast X. While it’s unclear what his motives ultimately are, he probably wanted money and power.
How Gisele Is Alive & Why She’s Working With Cipher
At the end of Fast X, Gisele appears atop a submarine, coming to rescue Cipher and Letty from prison in Antarctica. This was a huge shock considering she died at the end of 2009’s Fast & Furious, falling to her death after saving Han. Considering the franchise resurrected Han, Gisele’s return should come as no surprise. And while Fast X doesn’t provide any immediate answers surrounding her survival, it’s possible she was somehow rescued by Cipher in exchange for her loyalty. This would explain why Gisele teamed up with the villain, and why she’s back to help. Either way, it’s something Fast & Furious 11 will shed more light on.
Why Shaw Didn’t Help Dom Go After Dante
As teased in Fast 9’s post-credits scene, Han decides to go to Deckard Shaw for help in London, despite what Shaw did to him. Their meeting doesn’t last very long, however, because they’re attacked by mercenaries. Shaw ultimately opts out of helping Dom’s family go after Dante because he wanted to make sure his mother, Queenie Shaw, is safe after she and everyone Dom’s ever worked with is targeted. Despite Shaw not helping Dom and his team this time around, it’s possible he and his mother will return in the next Fast and Furious sequel to offer their assistance, especially now that Dante’s attack has made it personal for Shaw. He’ll be wanting his revenge.
The Rock’s Luke Hobbs Return Explained
Dwayne Johnson last appeared as Luke Hobbs in The Fate of the Furious, and in the spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. Fast X’s mid-credits scene marks The Rock’s return for the first time in a while within the main franchise, and it sees Hobbs on a mission seemingly set up by Dante, who is also wanting revenge on Hobbs for pulling the trigger on his father, killing him on the bridge in Rio ten years ago. Hobbs’s response to Dante isn’t one of fear; rather, he is ready for the fight. The mid-credits scene sets up Hobbs’ role in Fast & Furious 11, and his return will surely see him reunite with Dom after several years away.
How Fast X Sets Up Fast & Furious 11
Fast X ends on a cliffhanger, and there’s a lot on the line for Dom and his family. The film’s ending sees every family member in a precarious situation, and Fast & Furious 11 has to answer the questions surrounding how they’ll manage to escape Dante’s clutches when he’s been ten steps ahead of them at every turn. Fast X’s ending leaves Dom’s family unprepared and facing the fallout from Dante’s attacks, but it also introduces characters and twists that will help them gather to defeat Dante in Fast & Furious 11. Now that Cipher and Letty have escaped prison, they could head to Dom’s location and regroup before going after Dante.
The film’s ending also teases a team-up between Hobbs and Dom, who will likely pool their resources together to battle Dante. Now that Aimes has revealed himself as a traitor, Fast X also opens it up for Mr. Nobody’s return in Fast & Furious 11. Dante has left the team stranded, dead, in danger, and with a target on their backs by the final moments of the film, and the next chapter will pay off all the storylines left hanging, including the fate of certain characters. Fast X lays the groundwork for an even more epic sequel that will probably reunite the team and leave them stronger than ever.
Why Fast X Ends On A Cliffhanger (& What It Means)
Fast X is just one part of a complete story that has yet to be told in full. Following in the footsteps of Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and several other franchises that have ended with a two-part send-off (though Vin Diesel suggests a third Fast X film could be in the works), the latest Fast and the Furious film leaves storylines hanging in the hopes that audiences will definitely return to see how everything is wrapped up.
Fast X’s cliffhanger ending builds anticipation and tension, suggesting Dante has won the first round, but there’s more to come. The film is similar to Avengers: Infinity War, focused primarily on the villain of the story as he ruins the lives of the protagonists before they rise up even stronger to defeat him in Fast & Furious 11. The film’s cliffhanger allows the main characters to be in the lowest place possible, standing in the face of uncertainty and death in a defeat that is rarely this big. Fast X’s cliffhanger also marks the beginning of the end of the franchise, which has been going strong for more than 20 years.
