Big changes are coming for Daredevil as Marvel has revealed a new creative team will be taking over the hero’s book this September. With Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s saga winding down, Matt Murdock already has another crew ready to try their hands at the Man Without Fear.
On Marvel’s original podcast, This Week in Marvel, host Ryan Penagos spoke with Zdarsky and writer Saladin Ahmed about Daredevil. With Zdarsky’s epic run coming to a close this August, Ahmed is teaming up with artist Aaron Kuder for a brand-new Daredevil ongoing that will launch the following month. Ahmed discusses his excitement at working on the character, hyping up a focus on Matt Murdock and his world, but also promises an organic introduction to some key figures in the Marvel Universe. Speaking on his own run, Zdarsky says that now is the right time for his story to come to a close, highlighting the fun it’s been penning Daredevil’s adventures and working with Checchetto on their story. While no preview of the upcoming Daredevil #1 was released, Marvel did show off its cover, drawn by John Romita, Jr. which shows Daredevil crouching in the rain.
An Epic Daredevil Run is Finally Ending
The news is likely bittersweet for some Daredevil fans. Zdarsky and Checchetto began their run back in early 2019 and over the course of four years, they made some daring choices. Matt was sent to prison as a result of manslaughter, his longtime love interest, Elektra, took up the mantle of Daredevil, and his nemesis, Wilson Fisk, nearly destroyed New York’s superhero community during Devil’s Reign. Matt also took up the reigns of a secret organization known as the Fist to try and change the world for the better.
But in just a few short months, this saga will officially come to a close and a new chapter will start for Daredevil. Fans may wonder what sort of change is in order for Matt. Is his entire world going to go back to normal or will it evolve from the work Zdarsky and Checchetto have done? It’s going to be difficult to reset Daredevil back to the status quo as much of the current run saw the character come to terms with how broke the justice system is and his own culpability in it. Whatever the case, a new ongoing will no doubt serve as a good jumping-on point for Daredevil fans.
Daredevil’s New Run is a Chance to Start Fresh
Matt has been through Hell in his current run, but he’s also grown as a character. Even if he returns to his usual law career and veers away from being the leader of a ninja army, nothing can take away from the incredible journey he’s been on. Just because Zdarsky and Checchetto won’t be responsible for the character’s direction anymore doesn’t mean Saladin and Kuder won’t respect the story that came before. A new ongoing doesn’t have to mean bold, dramatic changes, but rather, it can be an opportunity to start fresh and pump new life into a character. Fans can see what awaits Matt Murdock in his new series when Daredevil #1 releases September 13th.
