Jason Momoa breaks down Dante Reyes’ motives and obsession with Dominic Toretto in Fast X. Dante Reyes is the son of Fast Five villain Hernan Reyes, and in Fast X, he is targeting Dominic Toretto and the family he has built to avenge his father. However, this isn’t the typical Fast villain. Dante Reyes has an unhinged aspect that makes him more terrifying than any of the other calculated criminals the Fast Family has faced off against before.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about Fast X, Momoa delved into Dante’s history. He explained what motivates his actions and how he attacks Dominic Toretto. Momoa also shared insight into how Dante’s obsession has morphed into a horrifying amalgamation of both love and hate, describing it as “you want to wear their skin.” Check out Momoa’s full quote and interview below:
Jason Momoa: You come from a crime family. My father was taken from me and then everything was taken from me. Not only that, but all our money. He was left to fend for himself in Brazil. He just spent a good part of his life obsessing about Dom and having that revenge, so someone who’s had everything taken from them just wanted to hurt him in the worst way and take away that legacy of his. Obviously, it’s his child and to break his family apart.
I feel like if you studied someone that much, you actually want to be them. You love them, and you want to wear their skin and become that. You just kind of play it that way and, emotionally, anything can come out. It can be funny; it can be sexy; it can be scary. But at the root of it, I’m going to wear your skin.
What Sets Jason Momoa’s Dante Reyes Apart From Other Fast Franchise Villains
Dante Reyes isn’t the first Fast franchise villain to have personal ties to Dominic Toretto, nor is he the first to target the Fast Family to get to him. Dominic Toretto went up against his own brother Jakob Toretto in F9, and Cipher killed the mother of Dominic Toretto’s child, held his son hostage, and forced him to work against his family. Deckard Shaw had a personal vendetta against Dominic Toretto, blowing up the Toretto house in an attempt to kill his loved ones.
However, what sets Dante Reyes apart is his obsession with Dominic Toretto and his desire to cause pain and suffering. He isn’t simply trying to kill the Fast Family nor is he using them for his own gain. Dante Reyes is a monster of Dominic Toretto’s making, but unlike Jakob Toretto and Deckard Shaw, he isn’t someone who will likely become an ally of the Fast Family down the line.
Momoa’s description of Dante studying Dominic so long that he has grown to, in a twisted way, love him with the wanting to wear his skin concept leans into the cruelty and sadistic nature of this character. This sets Dante Reyes up to be the Joker of the Fast Franchise, with an unpredictable but brilliant mind. He is also purposefully designed to be the opposite of Dominic Toretto in Fast X, from his wardrobe to his mentality that family opens one up to weakness. Dante Reyes can stand out from other Fast villains because he is a monster that Dominic Toretto not only created in Fast Five but unleashed on the world and his loved ones.
