The Conners showrunner Bruce Helford responds to the possible return of Becky’s love interest Tyler, played by Sean Astin, in season 6. Astin first appeared in The Conners season 5, episode 20, when Jackie and Louise’s attempts to find Becky a date result in her meeting Tyler. Becky and Tyler appear to have great chemistry throughout the episode, making his return as a love interest a possibility.
Speaking with TVLine, Helford directly addresses whether Astin could return as Tyler in The Conners season 6. The showrunner says that he will, mentioning how well Astin and Lecy Goranson, who plays Becky, play off one another. Check out Helford’s full statement below:
Absolutely. Whenever we bring in a new love interest, we’ve got to watch the chemistry, because we never know [if it will work]. But we love Sean, and they were great together, so we definitely want to bring them back together and see what we can find there.
How Will Sean Astin Factor Into The Conners Season 6?
Given how well Becky and Tyler’s conversations went in The Conners season 5, it’s no surprise that Astin is expected to return for season 6. Whether his capacity as a guest star could expand in the future is unclear. However, it seems his story with Becky is not done yet, meaning viewers will have to keep an eye out for his return in the future.
Astin’s Tyler could also help usher in an ending for The Conners. While it’s unconfirmed if The Conners season 6 will end the show, Helford has previously stated this could be the case, with a series finale in the planning stages. Astin’s return as Tyler in The Conners season 6 might give Becky a permanent love interest who she settles down with by the end of the series. This could mean Tyler shows up more on the show going forward, perhaps in a recurring role.
Helford has also stated The Conners season 6 could be shorter than the 20 to 22 episodes per season the show typically airs.
