The Last of Us season 2 will move on to the game’s sequel, The Last of Us Part II, however, it won’t adapt the entire story. Creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed to GQ it will be more than one season, but refused to confirm how many or how the story of The Last of Us Part II will be split.
The Last of Us season 1 adapted the game very closely, sometimes shot-for-shot. But some viewers were upset that the show had significantly less infected and less fight scenes than the game. Mazin addressed the infected issue at a press event, saying, “It’s quite possible that there will be a lot more infected later, and perhaps different kinds.” If The Last of Us season 2 has more infected, that may mean it’s adapting a particularly controversial section of the second game.
The Last Of Us Season 2’s Infected Changes Hint At Abby’s Story Appearing
Abby Anderson’s story in The Last of Us Part II features much more infected than Ellie’s plot, implying The Last of Us season 2 may focus on Abby more. The secondary protagonist of the game actually kills Joel as revenge for him killing her father, the Firefly surgeon who was going to operate on Ellie. The game then delves into Abby’s past, showing her point of view of the day Joel killed her dad and the years immediately after. She joins the Washington Liberation Front in Seattle, which is partially overrun by infected.
It would make sense for The Last of Us season 2 to give Abby’s background before returning to Ellie’s point of view and her own revenge plot in The Last of Us season 3. It’s important for viewers to understand that Abby isn’t necessarily a villain. In many ways, she’s similar to Ellie. Waiting too long to explore Abby’s past and motivations would turn the audience against her too much. But she’s still a controversial figure because of what she did to Joel.
Abby’s Infected Scenes Show The Last Of Us In A Totally Different Light
Abby’s scenes with infected would cast The Last of Us in a different light than viewers are used to. The Washington Liberation Front is full of brutal fighters and is more militaristic than some of the factions seen so far in The Last of Us. But even their many guns and soldiers can’t defeat the infected. The zombie-like creatures have overrun apartment buildings and the Seattle subway, limiting transportation in and out of the city. And more types of infected appear than viewers saw in The Last of Us season 1, including Seattle’s terrifying Rat King. The Last of Us season 2 promises to be very different from the first season.
