Jennifer Lopez bore the cold while filming The Mother in a snowy landscape. Released a day before Mother’s Day on Netflix, the new movie explores how far a mother will go to protect her child. The film is set in a fictional Alaskan wilderness town called Tlingit Bay.
The majority of the film takes place in the snow-covered wilderness where Lopez’s character hid with her daughter Zoe from the men who were trying to kill them. The Mother hunts animals and guards her cabin, keeping herself and Zoe safe from her enemies. While the film’s setting matches up with the region depicted in the film, The Mother wasn’t actually shot in Alaska. However, it was indeed filmed in freezing areas.
7 The Alaskan Wilderness Was Shot In Smithers, British Columbia
The majority of the film was actually filmed in Smithers, British Columbia. Unfortunately, the exact location of the cabin Lopez’s character inhabited is unknown, but it’s known to be somewhere in Smithers in the Bulkley Valley. Some crucial scenes were shot here, such as the part of the movie when the Mother was hunting for food.
6 The Mother Shot A Bridge Scene At Darrell Bay Ferry Terminal, Squamish, British Columbia
There’s one scene in the film that takes place at a dock in the fictional Alaskan neighborhood. The real location of the dock is the Darrell Bay Ferry Terminal in the town of Squamish in British Columbia. Filming in Squamish allowed the film to show off the locale’s beautiful scenery, as the Stawamus Chief Mountain can be seen in the background of some shots.
5 The Snow Mobile Scene Was Shot Around British Columbia
The Mother features a long, action-packed ending where Lopez’s character fights off her enemies while they’re all riding snowmobiles through the snowy mountains. The scene is intense as the Mother must control her snowmobile while also shooting at the men chasing after her. This scene was filmed across various locations in British Columbia. The Opal Mine near McDonell Lake Road was one shooting location, as were Microwave Ridge and The Prairie on top of Hudson Bay Mountain.
4 Cincinnati Park Was Filmed At Victory Square
Most of the film takes place in the snow, but not all scenes called for freezing temperatures. One such scene is when Zoe is kidnapped by the enemies of Lopez’ character. Lopez does her best to shoot at the men kidnapping her daughter, but they get away with it. This scene is set in Cincinnati Park in Ohio but was actually shot at a park in British Columbia called Victory Square. Not too far from the park, The Mother also filmed in a parking lot called EasyPark Lot. This is where the titular character breaks into a pickup truck from underneath and makes an escape from the villains.
3 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain Was Used As Havana
When it was time to shoot the scenes where Lopez’s character goes to Havana, the film crew took the production to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital city of Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands. Most of the Havana scenes were shot in a neighborhood called San Juan. There is a car chase scene in The Mother that is meant to look like Malecon, but the scene really takes place on Marina Street. During the chase scene, the characters get caught up in a wedding right as the protagonist hits Tarantula with her car. This particular sequence was shot outside the Cathedral of Santa Ana.
2 The Mother Shot At The Literary Cabinet Building
In a flashback scene where Lopez’s character is explaining to Cruise how she got involved with Álvarez and Lovell, she talks to Lovell on a balcony and later dances with him in the streets. The scene was shot at the Literary Cabinet building in Gran Canaria.
1 Various Other Locations
Some other locations that The Mother shot at were the Big 3 Gas station on Seabird Island, the Mission Bridge on Fraser River, and Wheelz Restaurant in Dewdney, where Lopez’s character stopped with Zoe to get lunch. All of these are located in British Columbia. Another scene, where Lopez’s character watches over Zoe, was filmed at Victory Square. As for the final scene in the film, where the main character says goodbye to Zoe so that she can be reunited with her foster mother, it was shot at the Church of Angels in Pasadena, California.
