Courteney Cox is recreating a classic Friends moment on TikTok, adding an action movie twist. The seminal sitcom has endured for years after its 2004 finale because the Friends cast has generally embraced their most famous roles. Though Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Cox have moved on to other projects, they don’t mind occasionally nodding to some of their most memorable scenes.
Cox does that in a new TikTok, adding an action movie twist to the famous dance from the Friends season 6 episode, “The One With The Routine,” which features the memorable dance created by siblings Monica (Cox) and Ross (Schwimmer). Check out the video below:
In the video, the Scream star collaborates with TikTok’s Kelli Erdmann and starts off as an action movie. Calling to mind John Wick or Lethal Weapon, Cox is initially a weary warrior reluctant to do the dance routine. She says, “I left that life behind, and made a vow never to return,” polishing her disinfectant spray in a Monica move, but she eventually gives in.
What The Enduring Popularity Of Friends Means For A Reboot
The TikTok, including Cox’s recreation with singer Ed Sheeran, proved popular with commenters, some of whom asked Cox to recreate the moment with Schwimmer. Given that Friends is popular with both new fans and carries a lot of nostalgia, it’s impressive that a reboot has never been seriously attempted, even when many other less popular comedies have gotten the reboot treatment.
No reboot developments are due to the cast not being interested in reprising their roles. It was also suggested during HBO Max’s Friends reunion special that a revival would ultimately undo some of the happy endings that characters like Monica and Ross achieved, potentially hinting at another break-up for Ross and Rachel.
A different possibility could involve a reboot focused on the children of the original characters, but that idea ignores that it wasn’t the show’s premise that garnered its popularity. The premise of a rom-com sitcom with a close group was not new by the time Friends debuted, but what made the show special was the actors themselves, making any reboot that doesn’t center them to be missing the point.
