Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 gets a disappointing update from James Gunn despite Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 performing well at the box office. One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s beloved franchises officially came to an end this year as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 saw the heroes on one final mission together. The film also marked Gunn’s proper exit from the MCU as he is now focusing completely on creating the new DC Universe for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios. Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy finale is already succeeding at the global box office, having pulled in almost $530 million dollars.
However, despite the commercial success and critical praise, a future Guardians of the Galaxy movie may not be as much of a guarantee. Gunn was recently asked on Twitter if there is any chance for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 in the future. The filmmaker gave a short but disappointing update, claiming that there is no real chance of that.
It’s worth taking into account that Gunn may have meant that there is “no real chance” for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 with him as the filmmaker. Chances are that another director could start a new trilogy with those characters, as Gunn runs DC Studios on a full-time basis.
Why Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 4 May Not Be Needed Right Now
As interesting as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 would be, the team doesn’t necessarily need another solo film to be utilized within the MCU. Given how big Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s ending was, it would only be an injustice to rush the development of a sequel just to keep up the momentum. Instead, having the new Guardians team participate in other MCU films and shows would be the better choice. While it’s unclear where they will appear next, it feels safe to speculate that Rocket and his team will return in at least Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars in some capacity.
Even though Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 would seem like a sure thing, it’s key to remember that Marvel Studios already has a lot of other franchises in the works, both old and new ones. While plans for Phase 7 haven’t even been announced yet, it wouldn’t be shocking if Kevin Feige has plans for that slate already, which would make the wait for another Guardians of the Galaxy film a long one. It’s even possible that Feige has things lined up for Phases 8 and 9 too, which would push things back further.
Time will tell how the MCU plans to use the Guardians of the Galaxy after their trilogy finale, but it seems unlikely that they’ll never be used agian. At the very least, Star-Lord will return based on Guardains‘ post-credits title screen. But for now, until Feige reveals any official plans, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 isn’t happening any time soon.
