The next action-packed installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, Fast 11, has exciting story details, a promising cast, and a not-too-distant release date. Fast X marks the beginning of the end for The Fast Saga, kicking off a multi-part finale that will wrap up the story of Dom Toretto and his fast and furious found family. Fast 11 follows up on that story as Toretto and co. get closer to their endgame. Vin Diesel, the star and producer of the franchise, is already building hype around the next Fast & Furious movie.
No Fast & Furious sequel has been as intrinsically linked to its predecessor as Fast 11. Whereas most Fast & Furious sequels are their own standalone action movies, Fast 11 is the second part of the overarching storyline that begins in Fast X. It’s a true sequel in the sense that other entries in The Fast Saga aren’t. Since it’s still in the early stages of development, there aren’t many story details or casting announcements for Fast 11 just yet. However, there are a few things known about the next Fast & Furious movie.
Fast 11 Latest News
After Fast 11 was announced as the last mainline Fast & Furious movie, Diesel recently teased that Fast 11 won’t be the final installment of the Fast & Furious franchise after all. While it was originally intended as the second part of a two-part story to conclude The Fast Saga, Fast 11 is now being planned as the second part of a three-parter. After the studio first saw Fast X, they asked Diesel to turn it into a trilogy. Michelle Rodriguez pointed out that there are “three acts in any story,” so it makes sense to tell the final chapter of the Fast & Furious saga in three parts.
Fast 11 Confirmed
Fast 11 has been officially confirmed to be in development at Universal as a continuation of the story in Fast X. Fast 11 was confirmed at the same time as Fast X when it was originally planned as a two-part finale. The closest parallel was Marvel’s own two-part climax, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which were similarly announced together. Two-part finales have become common in Hollywood – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, etc. – but a three-part finale is unprecedented.
Fast 11 Release Date
While Fast 11 doesn’t have a confirmed release date, Universal is aiming to release the next Fast & Furious installment sometime in 2025. Fast 11 will likely be released in the spring or summer window of 2025, since every previous Fast & Furious movie has been released between April and June. On the release schedule of 2025, Fast 11 will face stiff competition from some highly anticipated comic book movies, including Marvel’s Fantastic Four and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and DC’s Superman: Legacy and The Batman Part II. Toretto is up to the challenge – with its near-invincible characters, Fast & Furious is essentially Universal’s own superhero franchise.
Fast 11 Cast
Universal hasn’t announced an official cast list for Fast 11, but it seems inevitable for Diesel to return as the series’ lead, Dom Toretto. Anyone from Dom’s family who isn’t killed off in Fast X will be expected to return in Fast 11: Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto, Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges as Tej Parker, Sung Kang as Han Lue, and Nathalie Emmanuel as Ramsey. Other main cast members, like Jason Statham as villain-turned-ally Deckard Shaw, Helen Mirren as Shaw’s mother Magdalene “Queenie” Ellmanson-Shaw, and John Cena as Dom’s long-lost brother Jakob Toretto, could also reprise their roles in Fast 11.
Dwayne Johnson’s appearance as Luke Hobbs in Fast X’s post-credits scene will likely lead to a larger supporting role in Fast 11. Fast X newcomers like Jason Momoa as the villainous Dante Reyes, Brie Larson as rogue agent Tess, and Daniela Melchior as Brazilian street racer Isabel could reappear in Fast 11 as it follows on from Fast X’s ending. In addition to returning cast members, Diesel has announced that he wants Robert Downey, Jr. to play the villain in Fast 11. He described the villain conceived for Fast 11 as “the antithesis of Dom.”
Fast 11 Director
Universal has confirmed that Fast X director Louis Leterrier is returning to direct Fast 11. Leterrier managed to turn around Fast X under immense pressure. He was brought on as a last-minute replacement after long-time Fast & Furious director Justin Lin left the franchise due to creative differences. Since Lin departed from the project right before filming was set to begin, Leterrier had far less time to prepare to shoot Fast X than filmmakers usually get with these big-budget franchise tentpoles. After he pulled off Fast X under these circumstances, the studio has enough faith in Leterrier to bring him back for Fast 11.
Christina Hodson and Oren Uziel have been confirmed as the screenwriters for Fast 11. Hodson is best known for writing Bumblebee and Birds of Prey, while Uziel is known for his work on the scripts for 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox. Leterrier has teased that he’s planning something even bigger than Fast X for Fast 11. The director explained, “What we’re planning on the next one is just gigantic, in terms of action, scope, and emotion.” He’s promised that Fast 11 will not only thrill audiences, but also tug on their heartstrings: “You will feel all the feels. Tears will roll.”
Fast 11 Story Details
While the specifics of Fast 11’s plot are being kept under wraps for the time being, the cast and crew have teased story elements for the next Fast & Furious movie. As the second part of the overarching Fast X narrative, Fast 11 will follow on from the cliffhanger ending of Fast X. Fast 11 will also provide a true farewell to Brian O’Conner, the franchise’s co-lead played by the late Paul Walker. Diesel said that ending Brian’s story is integral to ending the Fast & Furious series: “I couldn’t imagine this saga ending without truly saying goodbye to Brian.”
Will Fast 11 Be The Last Fast & Furious Movie?
While it’s part of the Fast X finale, Fast 11 won’t be the last Fast & Furious movie. Although it was originally conceived as the final chapter of the mainline saga, it’s since been retooled as the penultimate chapter. Fast & Furious 12 will conclude the saga instead. Just because the main saga is ending with Fast 12, it doesn’t mean Universal will let the lucrative Fast & Furious brand die. There could still be Fast & Furious spin-offs like Hobbs & Shaw 2 after Fast 11 and Fast 12 have wrapped up the Toretto family storyline.
Fast 11 Trailer Info
While there’s no trailer for Fast 11 as of yet, it’s possible to speculate on when fans can expect to see one. The first trailer for Fast X dropped online on February 10, 2023, a little over three months before the film’s release date. This was one year and seven months after F9 was released in theaters. If the Fast 11 trailer debuts a year and a half after Fast X’s release, then it could arrive in late 2024. If it’s three months before Fast 11’s release date, then it’ll more likely arrive in early 2025.
