The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom showed off some of its creative building tools ahead of its release, but getting hands-on with the game has revealed just how deep – and inappropriate – building in TOTK can be. The direct sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild has big shoes to fill, but already it’s proving to be a hit when it comes to its focus on player creativity and freedom.
Washington Post games reporter Gene Park, who reviewed Tears of the Kingdom for the publication, took to Twitter to share one of his more inappropriate creations from the game, highlighting just how weird players can get when it comes to building. Park’s self-titled “robot with the fire breathing dragon penis” features a male appendage that shoots flames, complete with round discs below for added anatomical authenticity.
Nintendo, being one of the more family-friendly publishers, probably didn’t envisage players getting inappropriately creative with Link’s new building skills, but that certainly didn’t stop Park. The innovative in-game robot isn’t just a hilarious example of what fans can build in the game, but also teases the level of creativity Tears of the Kingdom will truly allow.
Link’s New Powers In Tears Of The Kingdom
Park’s building skills come courtesy of a host of new abilities for Link in TOTK. Recall, Fuse, Ultrahand, and Ascend are all four of Link’s new powers, each of which makes traversing the lands of Hyrule more fun than ever. Recall can be used to send items back in time; Fuse allows weapons and materials to be attached; Ultrahand binds items for building; and Ascend sees Link move through solid objects.
One of the many reasons why Breath of the Wild continues to capture the imagination of players is due to its creative gameplay. Link’s powers, the semi-destructible world, and the smart design of enemies mean there’s been no shortage of ingenious combat and puzzle-solving over the years. Thankfully, Tears of the Kingdom embraces this same style, adding even more to Link’s arsenal in the form of vehicle building, new powers, and more.
Tears of the Kingdom may have only just launched, but players already running rampant and flexing their creative flair in the latest iteration of Hyrule proves that BOTW wasn’t the height of Legend of Zelda games, but a building block for more. There’s set to be even more impressive fan creations over the next weeks, months – and possibly years – as players explore deeper into Tears of the Kingdom, and that might well lead to even more inappropriate creations.
