“Drawing Badly Until TOTK Releases” Finally Concludes After 914 Days

The viral Reddit art series “Drawing Badly Until TOTK Releases” has finally come to its end, an impressive 914 days after the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom-inspired endeavor began. The sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild is undoubtedly one of the most highly-anticipated games of all time, leading to fans counting down the days in a way to make the long wait as fun as possible.

One such dedicated player is Redditor theDuckPancake, who has been creating “badly drawn” artwork each and every day for more than two years – 914 days, to be exact. The user took to Reddit to celebrate the end of their journey with perhaps their most exciting drawing to date, showcasing what appears to be every single Drawing Badly doodle since the Redditor began. Prefacing the image, theDuckPancake writes: “After 2.5 years and likely over 1000 drawings, Tears of the Kingdom is just around the corner, and that doesn’t quite feel real. I never thought I’d actually get this far but all the support pushed me forward.”

At the time of writing, the post has already received almost 50,000 upvotes as Redditors of the /r/Breath_of_the_Wild/ community celebrate the impressive achievement.

With each and every one of theDuckPancake’s Zelda art different, it’s certainly impressive to see the time and dedication put into the series. Some of the doodles have celebrated BOTW, made a meme out of Link and his cohorts, or simply lamented the lack of TOTK news from Nintendo over the years leading up to the game’s launch. With so much variation and dedication, it’s no wonder theDuckPancake has become something of a hero to Zelda fans on Reddit.

Drawing “bad” art every day until a game’s launch might seem, on the surface, like an arbitrary project, but theDuckPancake’s Tears of the Kingdom art series has become a mainstay of the subreddit, bringing a little bit of laughter into what turned out to be a very long wait for the BOTW sequel. The game was first announced back in 2019, received its official title in 2022, and finally released on Friday, May 12, 2023 – almost exactly four years after it was revealed.

theDuckPancake might not have been drawing badly since 2019, but sticking to any daily project for a consecutive 914 days is a feat to be admired – especially as it’s helped the long road to Tears of the Kingdom a little more fun for countless Reddit users. It’s not yet clear if theDuckPancake will continue the series in another form – perhaps drawing badly until Tears of the Kingdom DLC is announced – but hopefully Reddit hasn’t seen the last of theDuckPancake’s daily Legend of Zelda artwork.
