This weekend, Netflix is adding a documentary drama series that has already been the subject of controversy, an action drama movie, and a new season of one of Netflix’s most popular reality shows. Last weekend, the streaming giant welcomed a long list of licensed content to kick off a new month, with the most notable titles being the Austin Powers movie trilogy, David Fincher’s The Curious Base of Benjamin Button, the horror movies Dawn of the Dead and Paranormal Activity, the psychological drama Girl, Interrupted, the epic Western drama Legends of the Fall, the comedies Pitch Perfect and This is the End, the drama Steel Magnolias, and the comedy-drama A Man Called Otto.
When it comes to original content, last weekend saw the arrival of the Turkish drama TV series The Tailor, the drama limited series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and the Japanese drama TV series Sanctuary. This weekend, on the licensed content front, Netflix will add the animated series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, season 4 of the comedy parody series Documentary Now!, the comedy-drama movie St. Vincent, the documentary Call Me Kate, and the animated movie Uglydolls. As for original content, the streaming giant will bring a documentary drama series about a monarch which has drawn a lot of controversy, an action drama movie starring Jennifer Lopez, and the return of the Fab Five. Here are the best movies and TV shows coming to Netflix this weekend – May 12.
Queen Cleopatra
Queen Cleopatra is a documentary drama series executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, and it’s the second season of the documentary series African Queens, which explores the stories of female monarchs from the African continent. Queen Cleopatra takes a look into the life of the famous, powerful, and deeply misunderstood Queen Cleopatra, a daring monarch whose beauty and romances ended up overshadowing her intellect. The story of Cleopatra has been endlessly embellished and rewritten throughout history, and Queen Cleopatra looks to re-assess her story, political brilliance, and the questions around her heritage, which has been a big topic of debate and controversy for years.
The Mother
The Mother is an action drama movie directed by Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife, Mulan) and starring Jennifer Lopez. It’s the story of a former assassin (Lopez) who after hiding out in the Alaskan wilderness, comes out of hiding to protect the estranged daughter she had to give up years before but never stopped loving – and if that wasn’t enough, she’s now also running away from dangerous assailants. Also starring in The Mother are Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, Gael García Bernal, Paul Raci, and Jesse Garcia.
Queer Eye – season 7
The Fab Five are back with a new season full of heartwarming stories and life lessons. This season, Bobby, Jonathan, Antoni, Karamo, and Tan will travel to New Orleans to meet a variety of residents looking for a fresh start in their lives, and the team is ready to share their knowledge in their respective areas and (of course!) make new friends. Just remember to grab the tissues, as there will be some truly moving stories, as it’s the tradition in all Queer Eye seasons.
