Glee star Dianna Agron opens up about a long-standing rumor regarding her involvement with the show, addressing it directly. As the popular cheerleader Quinn Fabray, Agron portrayed a time-honored teen drama arc of a superficially cold mean girl that reveals more layers and depth as the show progresses. But as it moved into its second half, Glee downgraded most of its formerly main cast to recurring and guest appearances. That included Agron, who was notably absent from the tribute episode that aired following Cory Monteith’s death.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Agron was asked about whether she’d been banned from appearing in the Cory Monteith tribute episode. Titled “The Quarterback” and aired as part of Glee season 5, the hour served to honor Monteith after his passing in 2013 and as a way of respectfully writing off his character Finn Hudson. In her response, which is included below, Agron directly says those rumors are “not true” and shares some of her thoughts:
Not true. I think there are so many false pieces of information out there. That’s the weirdest thing that you have to learn in this industry — you don’t comment on things that are untrue, because that gives them more space. Maybe at the end of my career I’ll write a book and go into detail on everything that was very true and very untrue.
Dianna Agron Remained With Glee Until The End
Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy recently reflected on the tribute episode, admitting that he felt conflicted about it and saying that he wouldn’t have necessarily gone through with it today. He also talked about how it was difficult for the cast, not only having to play characters in mourning and grief but also dealing with the sudden loss of a beloved co-worker. Agron has said her memories of Glee are complicated by the deaths of Monteith and later Naya Rivera, who played Santana, and passed away in 2020.
Though she didn’t appear in “The Quarterback”, Agron would return to Glee several more times before the show ended. In all, Agron would make eight appearances on the dramedy after exiting as a main cast member. She appeared three times in Glee season 6, the show’s last, with Quinn looking back on her connection with Finn. She was also part of the series finale.
In recent years, Agron has had a number of notable roles. Agron’s currently starring in Clock, a horror thriller streaming on Hulu, and Disney+ internationally. She also earned praise for her supporting turn in the acclaimed dark comedy Shiva Baby. Looking back on her breakout role as Quinn on Glee, the actor says it came with a lot of life-changing positives and some glaring negatives. One of those, unfortunately, was the amount of speculation and rumors attached to the cast.
