It will soon be time for a new Doctor to grace the screen now that Jodie Whittaker’s Flux storyline has concluded, and here’s what we know about Doctor Who season 14. Since returning in 2005, Doctor Who has enjoyed immense success under three different showrunners (Russell T. Davies, Steven Moffat, and Chris Chibnall) across five very different regenerations of the Doctor. The current tandem of Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker is now part of the TARDIS furniture, clocking up two full-length seasons between 2018 and 2020, and the 6-part Doctor Who: Flux in late 2021.
Doctor Who: Flux picked up from season 12’s shocking Timeless Child reveal, and introduced The Doctor’s latest/oldest threat, the Ravagers. The Ravagers begin ravaging the universe, taking advantage of the Flux event as it rips through time and space decimating galaxies. Doctor Who: Flux concludes with “The Vanquishers,” in which The Doctor effortlessly halts the Flux, commits genocide against her enemies, flirts with Yaz, and receives an ominous warning from the physical manifestation of Time. That’s a long night’s work, but Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor won’t be out of action for long. Now Doctor Who: Flux is over, what does the future hold for Doctor Who season 14?
The Latest Doctor Who Season 14 News
A new Doctor has been cast for Doctor Who season 14, and will be played by none other than Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education). As his companion, showrunner Russell T. Davies has cast Millie Gibson (Coronation Street) as the Doctor’s companion, Ruby Sunday. Filming has officially begun on Doctor Who season 14, as announced on Twitter on December 5th. It is unclear as of yet when filming will wrap on the latest installment. A picture of the new Doctor and Ruby Sunday in their new costumes has also been posted to Twitter by the BBC Press Office account.
In the interim, there have been various pieces of Doctor Who season 14 news to pass the time. It’s been revealed that Jinkx Monsoon has been cast as a Doctor Who villain, with the official Twitter page for the series showcasing Monsoon in costume and being described as “the Doctor’s most powerful enemy yet!”. Nothing about Monsoon’s character has been revealed yet, but some are posturing that the piano keys on Monsoon’s costume could hint that the character is either the head of an evil stage production or will prompt a musical episode, which would be a first for Doctor Who.
It has also been revealed that Doctor Who season 14 will return to the 1960s, where they’ll come up against Jinkx’s villain. It seems as though Russell T. Davies is finally leaning into Doctor Who‘s nostalgia factor. The return to the ’60s gives Doctor Who the opportunity to reflect on where it’s going and where it’s been, returning to the show’s humblest beginnings six decades later. Finally, some set photos have been released via Twitter of Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor stepping in and out of the TARDIS onto a residential Bristol street where he meets Anita Dobson’s Mrs. Flood.
Doctor Who Season 14 Is Confirmed
Unsurprisingly, Doctor Who season 14 has been confirmed, and along with it, an old showrunner will be taking Chris Chibnall’s place. Alongside Jodie Whittaker’s departure announcement in July 2021, Chris Chibnall confirmed his own exit as showrunner. According to the BBC’s announcement, Davies will remain as showrunner for at least Doctor Who season 14 – possibly beyond. Davies masterminded Doctor Who‘s comeback in 2005 and held the showrunner position through the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant regenerations, handing over to Steven Moffat in 2009. While Doctor Who season 14 has been renewed, the episode length has been cut down to a total of 8 episodes for the upcoming installment.
Doctor Who Season 14 Release Date Prediction
The wording of the BBC’s official announcement implies Russell T. Davies’ first task upon returning to Doctor Who is the 60th anniversary special, which would fall on November 2023. Those celebrations could comprise a single episode or a mini-run similar to Doctor Who: Flux (though probably the former, given the 50th), and would inevitably lead into a festive special for December 2023. That would suggest a Fall 2024 premiere date for Doctor Who season 14 proper. Doctor Who premiere dates have been notoriously erratic, but 5 of the past 7 seasons started between August and October, suggesting a lengthy gap between the Fourteenth Doctor’s debut and Doctor Who season 14.
Doctor Who Season 14 Cast
Several members of the Doctor Who season 14 cast have been officially announced, with Sex Education‘s Ncuti Gatwa playing the new Doctor and Millie Gibson as his companion, Ruby Sunday. Jemma Redgrave (The Grid) will be returning to Doctor Who season 14 as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, the Chief Scientific Officer at UNIT. Doctor Who newcomer Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) will be playing the character Roger ap Gwilliam. Anita Dobson (EastEnders) has been cast as a character named Mrs. Flood, and Jack Forsyth-Noble (Casting Kill) will play a character known only as Will. Finally, Jinkx Monsoon (RuPaul’s Drag Race) has been cast as a villain.
In addition, there are several other people that have been cast in undisclosed roles. Michelle Greenidge (After Life) is a part of the Doctor Who season 14 cast, along with Bhav Joshi (Wedding Season). Eilidh Loan (A Castle for Christmas) and Pete MacHale (Choose or Die) are also reportedly a part of the Doctor Who season 14 cast. Finally, both Miles Yekinni (The Lost Pirate Kingdom) and Hemi Yeroham (Mamma Mia!) are also in the Doctor Who season 14 cast in undisclosed roles.
Doctor Who Season 14 Story
As of now, there is no news surrounding the Doctor Who season 14 story outside of the Doctor and his companion traveling to the ’60s. Obviously, the upcoming season has already been written as filming began in December 2022, but showrunners are keeping much of the plot under wraps. The general premise of the show will likely continue, with the time-traveling doctor and his companion saving various universes along the way. The Doctor’s previous regeneration will likely be discussed, with David Tennant becoming Ncuti Gatwa during the 60th anniversary special. Another thing that’s known is that UNIT will be back in Doctor Who season 14, thanks to Kate Lethbridge-Stewart’s involvement.
Doctor Who Season 14 Trailer
As of now, there is no official Doctor Who season 14 trailer. This is due to the fact that the latest installment has only just begun filming. That being said, the trailer above is for the 60th anniversary special and does include some footage with Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor. Presumably, the anniversary special will see Ncuti Gatwa transitioning into his new role as the Doctor, and possibly set up some of the events for Doctor Who season 14.
