Warning! Spoilers ahead for Young Sheldon season 6, episode 19.A funny comment in Young Sheldon season 6, episode 19 just mocked Sheldon and Amy’s emotional The Big Bang Theory wedding. Following years of dating, The Big Bang Theory season 11 capped things off with the couple tying the knot. Unlike Penny and Leonard’s marriage, seeing Sheldon getting married was one of the most unexpected plot lines in the sitcom. When The Big Bang Theory started, he barely had any social skills, let alone the ability to maintain a romantic relationship. Seeing him commit to Amy was very satisfying for everyone who watched him gradually grow as a human being over the years.
The Big Bang Theory may have wrapped up with a happy ending for Sheldon, but CBS continues to explore the character via Young Sheldon. Seeing the socially-inept genius happily married, surrounded by good friends, and Nobel Prize in Physics winner was genuinely heartwarming. That being said, learning his backstory in the prequel allows fans additional context to some of his most ridiculous quirks and preferences. In some instances, it also makes some of his achievements more special. Other times, however, Young Sheldon ruins The Big Bang Theory by cheapening certain aspects of it, including Sheldon and Amy’s wedding.
Adult Sheldon’s Narration Mocks His Big Bang Theory Growth
In Young Sheldon season 6, episode 19, “A New Weather Girl and Stay-At-Home-Coddler,” Jim Parsons’ adult Sheldon narration returned. He shared his perspective on life milestones and how his point of view differed from the rest of the world. The socially-inept genius said that getting married and having children weren’t his goals, but his professional achievements. Since this was adult Sheldon saying this, he was essentially ridiculing his progression in the nerd-centric sitcom. More specifically, he mocked his decision to prioritize getting married to Amy in The Big Bang Theory season 11 instead of continuously working on his breakthrough on the Super Symmetry paper.
At this point, Sheldon and Amy had been tinkering with the idea of the scientific study for a while. Young Sheldon has made it clear that winning the Nobel Prize in Physics was Sheldon’s lifelong goal. The fact that he continued to wear his medal after winning it, has proven how important the accolade was to him. That being said, deciding to focus on his wedding with Amy on the cusp of a big discovery showed his growth over the years. So hearing that he no longer seemed to value his relationship with her and their children in his post-The Big Bang Theory life was disappointing.
Why Amy & Sheldon’s Wedding Is So Important To Big Bang Theory
Throughout The Big Bang Theory‘s 12-year run, Sheldon had many milestones. Nothing was as satisfying or emotional, however, as seeing him tie the knot. His marriage to Amy was the first personal success in his life, especially after years of trying to pretend that he preferred being alone. It was also a great payoff in terms of all his social hardships in Young Sheldon. Even Mary was skeptical of the idea. Meanwhile, co-creator Chuck Lorre didn’t want Sheldon to have any kind of personal life, but the progression of the character organically resulted in him falling in love and getting married.
Why Young Sheldon Is Ruining Sheldon & Amy’s Relationship
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Young Sheldon season 6 ruined Sheldon and Amy’s relationship in The Big Bang Theory. Earlier in the season, Sheldon’s entanglement with Paige cheapened the first time he admitted to having strong romantic feelings with his future wife. Subsequently, a throwaway comment about being a completist depreciate one of the funniest sequence involving the couple in the nerd-centric sitcom.
Young Sheldon creating plot holes is inevitable, but these could have easily been prevented had CBS been more careful about their storytelling. Granted that they resulted in some hilarious moments, they have negative effects on The Big Bang Theory‘s established canon. Looking back at them, the spin-off prequel could have gone with any of them, and there would barely have been any impact on its storytelling.
Young Sheldon season 6 airs Thursdays on CBS.
