Warning! Spoilers ahead for Young Sheldon season 6, episode 18. Young Sheldon tends to create The Big Bang Theory plot holes, but it has become so bad that the prequel is now contradicting its own continuity. Despite existing in the same reality, there are major inconsistencies between the shows. Some of them are inconsequential, like Sheldon’s recollection of Billy being a bully, but others significantly impact the established canon, such as skipping George’s cheating scandal. Regardless of their nature, all of them highlight one big problem: Young Sheldon‘s lax approach to preserving canon.
For what it’s worth, the prequel contradicting its parent series is inevitable. There are so many stories from Sheldon’s childhood from The Big Bang Theory done purely for comedic purposes. This means that they don’t really make much sense narratively, so Young Sheldon opts to ignore them altogether for its own storytelling. However, there are instances that certain plot holes could have easily been avoided if CBS is more careful and intentional in preserving the established continuity. Now, it has become so bad that Young Sheldon is even contradicting itself.
Missy’s School Bus Scene Contradicts Young Sheldon’s Storytelling
In Young Sheldon season 6, episode 18, “Little Green Men and A Fella’s Marriage Proposal,” Missy is seen several times lining up at the bus stop to go to school. While this makes sense, considering the Coopers’ neighborhood, not to mention Missy’s age, it directly contradicts something that happened just a few episodes ago. In Young Sheldon season 6, episode 14, “A Launch Party and a Whole Human Being,” Missy made a big fuss about not being picked up by her parents. After her attempt to run away, she was grounded, with both Mary and George promising to keep a close eye on her.
Given these, it doesn’t make sense that she is suddenly left on her own to commute to school. It’s likely that the bus stop plotline is incorporated into Young Sheldon only to provide a different backdrop for Missy and Billy’s conversations. However, the show could have easily achieved the same thing if they staged it at school. What makes this worse is the fact that George also goes to Medford High School for work, so there’s no justified reason for Missy to ride the school bus.
Why Is Missy Suddenly Taking The School Bus?
Young Sheldon season 6 did show the fallout from Missy’s daring joyride with Paige. The only Cooper daughter was immediately grounded by her parents, as seen in Young Sheldon season 6, episode 17, “A German Folk Song and An Actual Adult.” Beyond that, however, it’s unclear if Missy is still in trouble with her parents. Since they promised to keep a close eye on her, it doesn’t make sense that they are now allowing her to go to school on her. That’s unless George is busy with other things, particularly fostering a new relationship with his possible mistress.
Young Sheldon season 6 airs Thursdays on CBS.
