The Walking Dead vindicated its largest plot hole early on in the course of the series and to the great benefit of TWD’s universe. The zombie apocalypse, the nature of infection, and the outstanding uncertainties The Walking Dead characters share with onlooking audiences, creates at times unavoidable, and often indisputable, plot holes throughout the series’ storyline. While some come with the territory of maintaining a certain suspension of disbelief for a world overrun by the undead, the rest of The Walking Dead’s plot holes have fans itching for resolution, or even a nod of acknowledgment toward their most pressing questions.
As the universe gradually expands and The Walking Dead timeline converges with its present and future spinoffs, certain plot holes are beginning to be addressed by The Walking Dead franchise as a whole. Although it seems a calculated effort is being made to answer big questions that have cropped up since the inception of the flagship series, one plot hole concerning zombie infection, while still left somewhat unresolved, has been justified as a driving force and immensely successful factor in The Walking Dead universe. Remarkably, without this substantial plot hole, The Walking Dead may not have become the distinctly successful apocalypse account that it’s known as today.
The Walking Dead’s Infection Created A Plot Hole (But Was Worth It)
In true TWD fashion, a big twist was revealed early on that changed the course of the series – in The Walking Dead season 2, Rick Grimes and his comrades became aware of the fact that all are already exposed to the infection of the zombie virus. That weighty nugget of knowledge is pivotal in the perspective of TWD’s survivalists, but it also causes a fair amount of confusion in audiences closely following the narrative. If everyone in The Walking Dead universe is predisposed to the virus, then the bite of a zombie is not causing the infection, and in turn, the science behind lethal zombie bites becomes all the more confusing.
Because of such muddied science, the lethal effects of a zombie bite is a major plot hole within The Walking Dead universe that has yet to be acknowledged completely. However, the plot hole wasn’t an accident because the nature of everyone’s death resulting in reanimation, even those who have passed of natural causes, is distinctive to The Walking Dead universe and sets it apart from other zombie narratives. The science of the zombie virus, comprising the zombie bite, is certainly shaky, but individualistic to the lucrative TWD story and worth the ride.
Walking Dead Spinoffs Can Finally Explain The Virus
The Walking Dead is looking to expand with upcoming TWD spinoffs including The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and Rick & Michonne while tying up the chronicles of Fear The Walking Dead in a season 8 finale. There are optimistic chances for answers in the near future – Daryl is anticipated to be on the cusp of finding information about the zombie virus near France where the outbreak began, and Rick is predicted to clash with the CRM, hopefully shaking more information about the status of the world in his pursuit. Each respective spinoff appears to be inching closer and closer to the truths of The Walking Dead, and the infamous zombie virus, and the plot hole it creates, could finally be one of them.
