The Diplomat continues to have a successful start on Netflix, remaining as the No. 1 TV series on the platform for its second week in a row. The political thriller stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, the new US ambassador to the UK who is forced to juggle international threats and her marriage to Hal Wyler, a fellow ambassador. The Diplomat was an instant success, taking the No. 1 spot for TV on Netflix for its debut week.
According to Netflix, The Diplomat‘s success has continued into its second week, with the series remaining the No. 1 show on Netflix for the week of April 24 to April 30. The series garnered 66.46 million viewing hours, up from the 57.5 million it racked up last week. The show’s success makes it unsurprising that The Diplomat season 2 is on the horizon.
Why The Diplomat Is A Huge Success
When The Diplomat debuted, it was able to knock another thriller, The Night Agent, off its No. 1 throne after sitting atop it for a month. The Night Agent ranked No. 4 for the final week of April, the series’ popularity slowing as The Diplomat came into the spotlight. The development also justifies Netflix’s decision to renew The Diplomat less than 2 weeks after it premiered.
The Diplomat is aided by having a talented cast, including Russell, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, and Rory Kinnear. The creator of The Diplomat, Debora Cahn, also has experience working on political series, having written episodes of The West Wing and Homeland in the past. Because of the seasoned actors and creator behind the scenes, it’s not surprising The Diplomat has become a hit for Netflix.
Much like The Night Agent, The Diplomat is another thriller series that has proven popular among Netflix viewers. With both The Night Agent and The Diplomat getting renewed for season 2 rather quickly, political thrillers may be the next big thing for Netflix’s future. It should prove interesting to see what new surprises are in store for The Diplomat season 2.
