The Conners executive producer Bruce Helford has indicated season 6 could be the final season of the family sitcom. A spinoff to the long-running sitcom Roseanne, The Conners follows the titular family and their daily struggles to get by while living in Illinois. While the series hasn’t been renewed for season 6 yet, an official announcement may be on the horizon.
However, according to TVLine, Helford revealed that, despite The Conners season 6 being highly likely, it could be the last for the show. He also said season 6 may be a shortened season, with around half the episode count of The Conners season 5. Check out everything Helford had to say below:
Sara Gilbert expressed to the network that we don’t want to go out without knowing that we are going out with a series finale so we can build to the right ending — and at this point in time, we feel that [next season] is possibly going to be the last season of The Conners. I would not [say that] definitively because the numbers were so good this season, and we’ve all had a really great time… but it’s definitely a possibility.
The conversation right now is about how many episodes can we do [depending on] whatever happens with the writers’ strike. There may only be 13 episodes. Obviously, we always want to do 20 or 22 [episodes], but at this point in time, we’re talking about if we can do 13 — God willing — and if we can do more, we’ll do more.
How The Conners Season 6 Could Be The Final Season
The Conners season 5 is already laying the groundwork for the end of the series. The Conners season 5, episode 22, titled “The Grad Finale,” will see Mark approaching graduation, a major milestone that could see him become less involved in the show when he goes off to college. Darlene and Ben have also decided to start working on their relationship, which could signal their decision to leave Illinois for a fresh start elsewhere.
The Conners ending with season 6 may also help the series tie up existing plot threads that were pushed to the wayside in season 5. This includes Becky’s college subplot that was introduced back in The Conners season 4, which was ultimately pushed to the background as the season progressed. By ending The Conners with season 6, plot threads that may have been forgotten will have a chance to be tied up.
Ultimately, it’s not yet clear if The Conners season 6 will be the final season, or if the show will end with a smaller number of episodes. However, Helford’s statement confirms the series will have a definitive ending no matter how much longer it goes on for. If The Conners season 6 is the end of the series, the family’s story is unlikely to be cut short with a dissatisfying conclusion.
