Elizabeth Olsen has expressed her desire to work with Quentin Tarantino, as the MCU star states that she hopes to be cast in the director’s upcoming final feature film project, The Movie Critic. Olsen joined Marvel Studio’s juggernaut franchise in a brief mid-credits scene for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, before appearing in 5 subsequent feature films and leading the studio’s debut Disney+ series, WandaVision. Tarantino revealed he would bring his directorial career to a close after 10 feature-film projects in November 2022, closing out his celebrated filmography after over 3 decades.
When speaking to Variety about her portrayal of Candy Montgomery in HBO Max’s Love & Death miniseries, Olsen revealed her hopes to work with Tarantino before he leaves his days as a director behind.
After discussing her personal favorite directors currently working in the industry and who she would hope to work with in the near future with host Clayton Davis, Olsen stated that she would hope to work with Tarantino, especially as his next feature is expected to be his last. I’d love to work with Tarantino before he retires, with his one last movie.
What Is Tarantino’s Final Feature Film About?
With Tarantino expected to retire from directing feature films following The Movie Critic, many keen film enthusiasts are keen on learning whatever they can about the director’s swansong tenth feature. The Movie Critic is set to begin filming in the fall with a script written by the director himself, and much like his previous film, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, is expected to be a story that dives into the ever-changing film industry during a specific period. While information on the plot of the film has been kept under tight wraps, sources who revealed The Movie Critic‘s premise stated that the film would center on a female lead navigating her way through 1970s Los Angeles.
Despite there being few details publicly available, speculation about the subject of Tarantino’s next feature began soon after the premise was revealed. Attentive followers of the director’s work were quick to cite Tarantino’s admiration for real-life film critic Pauline Kael in interviews, speculating that the influential writer’s outspoken perspectives and career activity throughout the 70s could make her an ideal candidate for the film’s protagonist. However, Tarantino dismissed speculation surrounding The Movie Critic during a 2023 Q&A session, stating the protagonist isn’t based on any singular noteworthy film critic.
While speculation surrounding the central figure in The Movie Critic has proven to be incorrect, there is still incredible anticipation surrounding Tarantino’s directorial final bow. Through stylized violence, pop culture nods, and quick curse-filled dialogue, the director has applied his filmmaking lens to war stories, high-stakes crime, westerns, and even the golden age of Hollywood to create widely celebrated, if not sometimes controversial hits. And with Olsen having become widely recognized for both her MCU tenure and her portrayals of complex figures in films including Martha Marcy May Marlene, she would be a perfect fit to lead Tarantino’s final feature.
