Knives Out was a huge hit in 2019, and Rian Johnson surprisingly struck up a deal to make the sequels for Netflix, which gave audiences a chance to watch it from home and discover some glaring Glass Onion plot holes. The sequel proved to be funnier and more over-the-top than the original whodunit, even getting some recognition when awards season rolled around. Daniel Craig returned as Detective Benoit Blanc, and the murder mystery raises the stakes, as the movie’s elements take a deep dive into injustice, elitism, and manipulation as part of its storytelling.
While all these parts work to bring together an elevated whodunit movie, there are some confusing plot points and examples of plot holes found in the movie. However, this is the case with just about any mystery story. From Andi receiving the mystery box to characters surprisingly unscathed, some viewers may have second thoughts about the Glass Onion plot holes. Luckily, the movie remained an entertaining excursion, and even with the plot holes, it still worked on just about every level for Johnson and his cast.
10 Nobody Realizes Andi Is Helen
In Glass Onion, it seems unlikely that every one of the Disrupters would not realize that Helen was impersonating her sister Andi. The big twist halfway through the film is that the standoffish Andi is actually her sister, Helen, and only Benoit Blanc knew this from the beginning. The problem is that Andi was supposed to be close with the other Disrupters, so it’s nonsensical that none of them would recognize her. Characters like Claire sensed Andi was acting differently but didn’t investigate any further, while Miles looked extremely shocked to see Andi alive. The killer at least has a reason to keep quiet to avoid suspicion, but the others should have noticed.
9 Who Was Derol?
So many people on the island received invitations from Miles to compete in the competition. However, there was also one person on the island that wasn’t part of the group, always showed up as comedy relief, and never did reveal why he was there. This was Derol, who was basically a scruffy character who mostly wandered around the island drinking and partaking in pharmaceuticals. However, he remains one of the Glass Onion plot holes, because his entire purpose on the island – or in the movie at all – is never once explained, even after everyone starts fighting and dying and the house catches on fire.
8 Nobody Gets Cut By The Glass
Like a house of cards, the titular Glass Onion house was destined to be destroyed. It was just inevitable that the film would end with a lot of glass shattering, but the characters are weirdly intact after the building crashes down around them. Helen literally crawls through broken glass at one point in the film, yet she remains completely unscathed. Miles stands right next to a bursting glass mirror and is totally fine later. While some may argue it was simply movie magic that they weren’t injured, it does get egregious at certain points and defies physics logic of how glass works.
7 Duke’s Allergy
The biggest irony of the movie is that Dave Bautista’s character, Duke Cody, is killed by a pineapple allergy. He’s a big man, so seeing him done by something so mundane is shocking and hilarious. When viewers think about it, though, there’s really no reason that an allergy should have killed him if he had taken the proper precautions. Duke should have had an EpiPen for his allergy, although It’s possible he left it in his room. Even if he did not have one, the others (especially Detective Blanc) should have realized he was having anaphylaxis, with his face turning red as a clear sign.
6 Loaning The Mona Lisa
Much of the film’s climax revolves around the Mona Lisa. Miles Bron has an obsession with the permanence of the art piece, and he flies it out to his private island to be seen. He mentions that the Louvre allowed him to do this because they were losing money during the pandemic. Putting aside that the Mona Lisa wasn’t destroyed, the way Miles retrieved it is also one of the Glass Onion plot holes. The Louvre does not own the Mona Lisa. The museum lends it out from its true owners, the Republic of France. While it’s possible the Mona Lisa could be lent out, it wouldn’t be in the way the film describes since the Louvre has no ownership.
5 How Did Miles Turn Off The Lights?
Movie scripts have a lot of contrivances for drama, such as when the lights turn off in the middle of the murder party. At the time, Miles cites the lights turning off as a part of his mystery party. Later on, it is revealed that that wasn’t the case since Miles got the blackout idea from Blanc. Unfortunately, the bigger offense of these Glass Onion plot holes is that there is no clarity as to how Miles turned off the powers. While he possibly had some kind of automatic command to do it, the blackout happened not long after his talk with Blanc, so it is definitely unclear when and how he ever set the power to go out.
4 Serena Williams As A Key Witness
Rian Johnson has a lot of connections, which allows him to pull plenty of celebrities for cameos. There were many great cameos in Glass Onion, like the Zoom call at the beginning of the film. This scene featured Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim. Another unexpected cameo appearance is tennis superstar Serena Williams. She appears in a funny scene as Miles’ personal trainer, watching Blanc and Helen discuss the case. While it’s a funny moment to realize she’s actually a live feed, it does make her look callous. Given that she is available 24/7 at the gym, she likely saw the murderer trying to kill Helen but did nothing about it.
3 The Knife
Glass Onion wouldn’t be a murder mystery without its red herring. Elements the audience expects to be important but are merely just a distraction are quite common in detective fiction. One major red herring was during the blackout scene when Blanc stumbles into Miles’ kitchen. There he sees a knife is missing from a knife set, and he grumbles about the danger of it. However, the knife never returns to the main plot, and Blanc never brings it up later. Eagle-eyed viewers will see Birdie is holding a knife, but it’s never addressed, so audiences never know what it’s for or when she could have gotten it.
2 Andi’s Puzzle Box
In Glass Onion, Miles says, “Aren’t you smart enough to uncover my puzzle box?” He sends each member a puzzle box, inviting them to the island. A deceased Andi also received a box, bringing more Glass Onion plot holes. Miles murdered Andi before the film’s events, and before that, he had a falling out with her from their court case. Miles still sent her a box, which does not make sense. Helen mentions she found the puzzle box in the garage when she went to her sister’s house. So, it is possible Andi received the puzzle box before her death. The real question is why Miles didn’t take it with him when he left her house after committing the murder.
1 Giving Location Details To A Dead Person
Problems still exist with the scene regarding Andi’s puzzle box. The puzzle box message reveals that “details on location will come in the mail.” This is something that Miles could have stopped, but he didn’t. If he knew Andi was dead, he didn’t need to honor her puzzle box message and send the letter about the location. It’s possible he sent it as an attempt as an alibi, but that’s never suggested by the film itself. Furthermore, Miles shouldn’t have sent that letter, as it allowed Blanc to be let into the island and expose him. Since he is not smart, it’s possible he simply didn’t realize it, or it is one of the Glass Onion plot holes that Johnson himself didn’t account for.
