The 8 Mile cast comprises not just a trailblazing musician but many other renowned character actors. Revolving around the everyday struggles of aspiring Detroit rapper B-Rabbit, 8 Mile is a semi-autobiographical take on rapper Eminem’s early years before he became a mainstream name in American hip-hop. 8 Mile also boasts iconic freestyle raps as B-Rabbit gives his all to perfect his rapping skills in underground rap battles. With the soundtrack also including Eminem’s Oscar-winning underdog anthem “Lose Yourself”, 8 Mile doubles as a motivational drama and a rap musical par excellence. Helmed by Curtis Hanson, this character study of a struggling rapper continues to be timeless.
As is the case with other Curtin Hanson-directed films like L.A. Confidential and Wonder Boys, 8 Mile also involves a talented ensemble. While B-Rabbit’s journey makes 8 Mile one of the best hip-hop films of all time, even minor characters like his sister Lily and naive friend Cheddar Bob steal the scenes they’re in. Although Eminem gets praised for his emotional lead performance, it must be noted that 8 Mile also launched a young pre-MCU Anthony Mackie. The newcomers in the 8 Mile cast are balanced well with stars who had already gained prominence in the 1990s with actors like Kim Basinger, Brittany Murphy and Michael Shannon.
Eminem As Jimmy/B-Rabbit
Marshall Mathers (AKA Eminem) leads the 8 Mile cast as car factory worker Jimmy. Living in a trailer with his single mother and young sister, Jimmy leads a life that’s far from perfect. However, he never gives up on his dream of becoming a rapper. Battling stage fright and rivalries in the city’s underground hip-hop scene, Jimmy comes up with innovative rhymes and sarcastic jabs under his rap battle alias B-Rabbit. The character is undeniably personal to Eminem, who himself came from a similar background and rose from being a battle rapper to a Grammy-winning hip-hop legend. Many movies and shows continue featuring Eminem’s music to this day.
Portraying B-Rabbit was a career milestone for Eminem also because of the 8 Mile soundtrack album that included the hit single “Lose Yourself”. At the 2003 Oscars, Eminem became the first hip-hop artist to win an Oscar as “Lose Yourself” won Best Original Song. Before 8 Mile, the rapper had an uncredited cameo as Chris in the Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre-starrer The Wash. The occasional actor also played a parodied version of himself in The Interview and drug trafficker-turned-FBI informant White Boy Rick in BMF, a crime drama produced by his good friend 50 Cent. He also played himself in the Entourage season 7 finale, aptly titled “Lose Yourself”.
Kim Basinger As Stephanie
Kim Basinger joins the 8 Mile cast as Stephanie, a woman who shares a strained relationship with her children Jimmy and Lily. The single mother is often foul-mouthed and usually belittles Jimmy, but she is also struggling mentally because of her abusive partner. Basinger reunited with director Curtis Hanson after starring in his neo-noir L.A. Confidential. She played the femme fatale Lynn Bracken for which she also earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Basinger also played James Bond’s ally Domino Petachi in Never Say Never Again, journalist Vicky Vale in Tim Burton’s Batman and art gallery employee Elizabeth McGraw in the erotic drama 9½ Weeks.
Mekhi Phifer As Future
The 8 Mile cast is incomplete without Mekhi Phifer, who plays Jimmy’s close friend Future. He also hosts rap battles and is always considerate of what Jimmy needs on stage. An interesting behind-the-scenes detail from 8 Mile is that the character of Future was actually based on the late rapper Proof, who was Eminem’s real-life best friend. Other than 8 Mile, Phifer has also appeared in the Divergent trilogy as Max, a member of the Dauntless faction. Phifer was attached to the medical drama E.R. as Dr. Greg Pratt and he also starred as CIA officer Rex Matheson in season 4 of the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.
Brittany Murphy As Alex
Alex is Jimmy’s love interest and the two seem to have quite a stable relationship initially. She likes the fact that Jimmy can defend his co-workers and stand up for what is right. Despite being a largely positive character, Alex is still imperfect as is evident from her unfaithfulness with Jimmy. The character is played by late actor Brittany Murphy, who broke out in the 1990s playing the good-natured transfer student Tai Frasier in Clueless and teen Daisy Randone in Girl, Interrupted. Murphy continued her stardom playing Elisabeth, a patient who is struggling with her mental health, in Don’t Say a Word and bartender Shellie in Sin City.
Anthony Mackie As Papa Doc/Clarence
Anthony Mackie’s best movies include 8 Mile, which also marked his acting debut. Mackie played Clarence, who raps under the alter ego Papa Doc and comes across as one of Jimmy’s main adversaries on stage. Papa Doc is unabashedly rude toward anyone whom he sees as a potential threat. He is also a violent person in general, even remorselessly holding Jimmy at gunpoint. The 8 Mile cast member found future fame playing the superhero Falcon/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Mackie has also played series protagonist Takeshi Kovacs in Altered Carbon, Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. in All the Way and rapper Tupac Shakur in Notorious.
Michael Shannon As Greg Buehl
Greg is Stephanie’s boyfriend and a former classmate of Jimmy’s. As rude and profane as his romantic partner, Greg is highly unlikeable as a person. He is not only ill-mannered towards Jimmy but Stephanie too and is quite an abusive boyfriend to her. Greg is one of Michael Shannon’s most underrated roles with the actor having portrayed many more villainous characters like the Kryptonian General Zod in Man of Steel, Colonel Richard Strickland in The Shape of Water and real-life hitman Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman. Shannon received two Oscar nominations for playing the protagonists’ neighbor John Givings in Revolutionary Road and hardened Detective Bobby Andes in Nocturnal Animals.
Evan Jones As Cheddar Bob
Cheddar Bob is one of Jimmy’s best friends, who constantly accompanies him in his misadventures. However, he can be irresponsible at times (such as the time when he accidentally shoots himself). Despite his actions, Cheddar is a loyal friend to Jimmy. After his time as an 8 Mile cast member, actor Evan Jones went on to appear as Private Dave Fowler in the war biopic Jarhead, basketball coach Moe Iba in the sports drama Glory Road and superhero Mick Rory’s father, Dick Rory, in Legends of Tomorrow. He also portrayed Retch, a member of Yondu’s clan of Ravagers in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Omar Benson Miller As Sol George
Sol George is another one of Jimmy’s friends who embark on different activities with him, be it paintballing cars on the street or witnessing rap battles. George doesn’t have many enemies and has a largely friendly persona. He is played by actor Omar Benson Miller who is known for playing CSI Walter Simmons in CSI: Miami. His work also includes the sports drama Ballers in which he portrayed NFL player-turned-sports executive Charles Greane. Miller is also a proficient voice actor having voiced Raphael in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the former Stormtrooper Finn in the LEGO Star Wars franchise.
De’Angelo Wilson as DJ Iz
DJ Iz is Sol George’s brother and Jimmy’s friend, carrying the same friendly demeanor as his peers. When Papa Doc and his crew fight Jimmy, DJ Iz doesn’t shy from getting involved in the brawl. The supporting character is played by De’Angelo Wilson. The 8 Mile cast member also appeared in the Denzel Washington-led biographical drama Antwone Fisher in which he played the protagonist’s best friend Jesse. He also appeared in an episode each of CSI: NY and The Shield. Wilson shared screen space with Candyman actor Tony Todd in the dramas Mercy Street and Falling Away. The latter marked his final film role.
