Netflix recently released a new Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget image that gets the whole gang back together. Created by Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, and Early Man studio Aardman Animations, the upcoming film is a direct sequel to the popular 2000 stop-motion comedy, Chicken Run. When American circus rooster Rocky Rhodes (Mel Gibson) crash lands inside a British egg farm’s large prison-styled chicken run, Ginger (Julia Sawalha) enlists the newcomer to lead the flock’s way to freedom before they’re killed and cooked by their owners Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy.

Ginger stands beside Rocky as she points to a mock-up of a new compound, likely planning an elaborate break-in. She is joined by hens Mac, Bunty, and Babs, the older rooster Fowler, and rats Nick and Fletcher.

After pulling off a daring escape from the Tweedy farm in Chicken Run, Ginger and her flock have found a new home on a peaceful secluded island sanctuary. Raising their newly-hatched daughter Molly, Ginger and Rocky will find themselves facing a new danger on the mainland that threatens the whole of chicken-kind. Ginger and Rocky must gather their capable feathered partners for one last mission, but this time they need to break in.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget sees the return of several of the original film’s voice cast. Imelda Staunton reprises her role as Bunty, Jane Horrocks as Babs, and Lynn Ferguson as Mac. However, Gibson and Sawalha have been replaced as Rocky and Ginger by Shazam!‘s Zachary Levi and Westworld‘s Thandiwe Newton, respectively. This recasting was not without controversy as Sawalha attempted to audition for the original role but was denied by the studio, prompting ageism accusations from fans.
British stand-up comic Romesh Ranganathan also replaces original actor Timothy Spall as Nick, Daniel Mays replaces Phil Daniels as Fletcher, and David Bradley now voices Fowler following original actor Benjamin Whitrow’s passing in 2017. The Last of Us Ellie actor Bella Ramsey joins the cast as Molly along with Ted Lasso‘s Nick Mohammed as Dr. Fry. Audiences can see Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget when it premieres on Netflix December 2023.
