Director Christopher McQuarrie’s cryptic behind-the-scenes social media post fuels speculation for a new Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One trailer. Tom Cruise is set to reprise his role as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in the first of a two-part entry in the long-running spy film franchise. The Top Gun: Maverick star is joined by series regulars Ving Rhames as expert computer hacker Luther Stickwell, Simon Pegg as technical specialist Benji Dunn, and Rebecca Ferguson as former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust.
McQuarrie recently took to Instagram to share a cryptic behind-the-scenes image, fueling speculation that a new Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One trailer is coming soon.
A monitor fills the top half of the image, displaying a still from a car chase in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Below the screen rests McQuarrie’s pet dog, a popular subject for the director’s many Instagram posts. Fans took to the post’s comment section to press McQuarrie for any additional updates.
Will Mission: Impossible 7 Feature The Franchise’s Best Car Chase?
It is unclear if McQuarrie’s image implies a forthcoming trailer, or if the director is applying final editorial touches. However, the still of the vintage yellow Fiat 500 teases a high-octane, thrilling car chase. Taking place on the streets of Rome, the previous Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One trailer shows Hunt struggle to control the diminutive vehicle while handcuffed to a mysterious new character, Grace, portrayed by Marvel Cinematic Universe star Hayley Atwell. The pair race through the city’s streets, weaving through unsuspecting motorists, to escape unknown pursuing adversaries.
The Mission: Impossible franchise has featured plenty of car chases, including Mission: Impossible 2‘s cliffside sports car tango, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation‘s chaotic Marrakesh pursuit, and Hunt’s Paris escape in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. However, to keep the film series’ obligatory sequence fresh, Dead Reckoning Part One aims to play with the set piece by hindering the protagonists in multiple ways. With both Hunt and Grace shackled together in a relatively underperforming vehicle, the IMF agent must use more than horsepower to escape his pursuers.
The upcoming entry also boasts one of the most dangerous motorcycle stunts ever filmed, rivaling that of GoldenEye‘s opening sequence. Both scenes feature the film’s lead spy ride a motorcycle off a cliff; however, Cruise has opted to perform the stunt himself. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One could be another landmark entry in action movie history.
