Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s villain reveal supports a major theory about what really happened during the Titan War. As things stand, the exact events that transpired during the ancient Titan War fought between Godzilla and Kong’s ancestors are unknown. However, the direction taken by the MonsterVerse indicates that some long-awaited answers are finally on the horizon.
Directed by Adam Wingard, the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong sequel is set to explore much more of the MonsterVerse lore surrounding the movies’ two titular Titans. Through the release of a new teaser trailer, Legendary has provided a glimpse into the “world-ending threat” teased by the film’s synopsis. From the looks of things, Godzilla x Kong’s main antagonist is a member of Kong’s species. The blue-aped ape, who sports an orangutan-like appearance, appears to be a hidden Hollow Earth monster and a creature who’s sure to have connections to the history of Godzilla and Kong’s ancient home.
Godzilla vs. Kong 2’s New Monster Makes A Titan War Theory More Likely
Interestingly, this Titan’s inclusion in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire calls back to one of the many theories to spin out of Godzilla vs. Kong’s ending. Although Kong was depicted as a sympathetic figure in the movie, it was speculated that his ancestors were the real antagonists of the conflict. This idea stemmed largely from the novelization, which revealed that the Titan War began when the Kongs launched a preemptive attack on Godzilla, whom they perceived as an evil beast. Due to the possibility that they didn’t actually have good cause for striking first, it was worth wondering if they were the villains.
The reveal of an evil Kong makes it all the more likely that this was indeed the case. His impending introduction also paints a new picture of the situation. If Kong’s ancestors had a malevolent leader, that would bolster evidence for the theory that they were a warmongering tribe who tried to eradicate Godzilla’s species. If that’s what really happened all those years ago, that would shed additional light on the near-extinction of Kong’s species, and perhaps justify Godzilla’s efforts to drive them out of the Hollow Earth. It would also make Godzilla and his allies the heroes of the story, rather than the perpetrators.
The MonsterVerse Hints At Why The Titans Were Really Fighting
As for why the two species may have been fighting, the sequel’s villain reveal provides a plausible explanation. In the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire teaser trailer, he’s shown to possess glowing blue eyes. This is a sign that he may have harnessed the secret Hollow Earth energy source that flows through Godzilla’s veins. If he valued its power, it’s not impossible that it was the real reason for all the fighting during the ancient Titan War. If Godzilla’s kind were the protectors of the energy source, he may have waged war on them in an effort to take it for himself.
