Actor Chris Evans recently admitted that he loved portraying a “damsel in distress” in his action romantic-comedy Ghosted. After a chance encounter with Sadie (Ana de Armas), charming farmer Cole Riggan (Evans) falls head-over-heels in love with the endearing woman. Unfortunately, after one amazing evening, Cole’s phone calls, texts, and emails to his mysterious love receive no response. In a desperate attempt to reconnect, he travels to London to surprise Sadie but quickly finds himself in the middle of an international action-packed spy adventure.
Speaking with Variety, Evans claimed he loved playing a “damsel in distress” in his new AppleTV+ movie Ghosted. Praising Ana de Armas, he admitted he enjoyed being saved for a change as he did not have to exert himself for heavily choreographed fight scenes. Read what Evans said below:
“It was great. I mean, we’ve all seen Ana be badass; she was so good in [‘No Time to Die’]. It was nice to be the damsel in distress. It was nice to need saving — primarily because I didn’t have to sweat during the action sequences.”
Ghosted Is New Territory For Chris Evans
Evans began his career in the early 2000s, quickly scoring lead roles in both television and film, notably in the Fox comedy series Opposite Sex and the satirical parody film Not Another Teen Movie. However, Evans reached stardom when he played his role as Johnny Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, in 2005’s Fantastic Four. His superhero fame led Evans to many roles requiring a strong male lead, including Sunshine, Push, and as Avengers team leader Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although Evans has appeared in several romantic comedies, including The Nanny Diaries with Scarlett Johansson (the original actor hired as Sadie before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts), he has yet to portray a helpless character in an action film. As with his Captain America movies and other action roles, Evans generally portrayed the driving force for justice, saving his costars along the way. For example, Evans’ character Curtis Everett in Snowpiercer leads a revolution on a train in perpetual motion to provide all the lower-class passengers the freedom they deserve.
Audiences may find Evans’ turn as the damsel in distress a bit jarring. However, de Armas has already proven in the Daniel Craig James Bond sendoff No Time to Die that she is more than capable of saving Evans as an action hero. With Ghosted set to release on AppleTV+, audiences can finally see Evans in the helpless role for once.
