Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Ultimatum: Queer Love season 1 episodes 1-4.
The Ultimatum: Queer Love has aired its first four episodes, but it only took a single episode to establish Vanessa Papa as the villain of the season. Vanessa, who entered the spin-off of The Ultimatum: Marry Or Move On with her partner Xander Boger, started the show as a chaotic and meddlesome cast member. However, Vanessa also made it clear that she is a massive hypocrite. She wants to be treated well, although she isn’t always so nice herself.
The Ultimatum: Queer Love season 1 introduced five LGBTQ+ female and non-binary cast members who are at crossroads in their relationships. One partner has issued a marriage ultimatum, while the other isn’t ready to tie the knot. Xander asked Vanessa to marry her after the long-time girlfriends dated for several years. Xander was ready for a commitment and kids. However, Vanessa’s afraid to lose her freedom, and has leaned heavily into dating around while on the show. While The Ultimatum: Queer Love challenges cast members to move in with new people, to see if their original partners are right for them, Vanessa has shown hypocritical behavior.
Why Vanessa Had No Right To Cry Over Xander
Vanessa was brought to tears on The Ultimatum: Queer Love when she learned that Xander wanted to live with Yoly Rojas, as Vanessa thought Yoly was mean to her. She was shocked that Xander had made a connection with someone else, and had a serious shot at leaving the show with another woman. However, Vanessa fully embraced dating after her split from Xander. Vanessa eagerly pursued something with Lexi Goldberg and her ex-girlfriend Rae, even though this messy situation had the power to implode Lexi and Rae’s relationship in the real world. She also embraced dating around, though she then sobbed when Xander made a single genuine connection.
Vanessa Is Playing With Fire With Rae
Vanessa made it clear that she is on The Ultimatum: Queer Love season 1 for selfish reasons. She seems more focused on creating chaos (and exploring her freedom) than she is on determining if she could be ready for marriage. Vanessa pursued two exes, and chose Rae, even after Lexi expressed how much it upset her.
Lexi told Vanessa that her close-minded attitude held back the other cast members as well, and prevented Vanessa from giving anything to anyone else. “You have this power in your hands to blow up a portion of my life because you don’t have anything to lose in your life,” Lexi told Vanessa. She was referencing her choice to pursue Rae after Lexi dumped Vanessa.
While Lexi made it clear that she’s wary of Vanessa, Vanessa had demonstrated that she is fixated on Lexi. When she got her nipples pierced during episode 4, she gleefully made it clear that she wanted to rub it in Lexi’s face that Rae had seen her bare-chested. Meanwhile, cast member Yoly also called out Vanessa for openly flirting with people’s exes in front of them. Vanessa appears to take a particular pride and glee in meddling in people’s relationships. She triggers emotional turmoil, rather than focusing on her own relationship needs (and future building) on The Ultimatum: Queer Love season 1.
