Actors who were themselves nominated for Oscars in 2022 also made a splash in other contenders from the year.
The collection of actors who have appeared in multiple Oscar-nominated 2022 movies shows the range of these stars, displaying an ability to play vastly different roles, with some going from dark and gritty dramas to broad comedies. The sizes of the movies are also varied with some actors appearing in smaller prestige projects as well as massive blockbusters but all were nominated for Oscars in all kinds of categories.
Andrew Garfield
Andrew Garfield had an amazing year in 2021, showcasing many aspects of his talents. Garfield’s return as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home led many to praise him for finding redemption in the superhero role. Shortly after, he found success in the musical Tick Tick… Boom!. Garfield received his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his work there though he lost to Will Smith in King Richard. Not only that, but Spider-Man: No Way Home was nominated for Best Visual Effects, and The Eyes of Tommy Faye, which Garfield also starred in, was nominated and won for Best Makeup and Hairstyling as well as Best Actress for Jessica Chastain.
Willem Dafoe
Willem Dafoe has been nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor in the past, for films like Platoon in 1986 and most recently At Eternity’s Gate in 2018. In 2022, however, he might not have gotten an acting nomination, but he did star in two nominated movies. First, Dafoe appeared in Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley which was nominated in four categories, including Best Picture. Dafoe also notably reprised his role as Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which received a nomination in the visual effects category.
Zendaya
Zendaya has made her way to the top of the acting scene, proving herself in many pivotal roles. Her performance in Euphoria proved that she can handle more serious topics, and she’s even broken out into different genres. Other than Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was nominated for Best Visual Effects, she was also in Dune, which was in the running for Best Picture but lost to CODA. Fans can look out for Zendaya in the upcoming sequel to Dune, where she will have a bigger role and might find herself getting an Oscar nomination of her own.
Maya Rudolph
Maya Rudolph has been known to be a successful voice actress and she even won an Emmy Award for voice acting in Big Mouth. Many fans might not even realize that Maya Rudolph was in two Oscar-nominated movies in 2022 because she just so happened to be in two films up for Best Animated Feature. Rudolph loaned her voice to both The Mitchells vs. the Machines and Disney’s Luca. Despite playing mothers in each film, the riles were entirely unique roles, proving her range and impressive voice acting skills. Both movies lost out on the Oscar as it was awarded to Disney’s Encanto.
Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper has been in quite a few Oscar-nominated movies in his career and a few years ago, his film A Star is Born was nominated for multiple awards. Cooper has been nominated for best actor three times but has yet to snag a win. While Cooper wasn’t nominated for Best Actor in 2022, he did appear in two movies nominated for Best Picture. Cooper starred in the lead role in the noir thriller Nightmare Alley while Cooper also appeared in a scene-stealing supporting role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza.
Awkwafina
Awkwafina is not new when it comes to award shows and being in successful movies. She previously won a Golden Globe for her work on The Farewell, but this was the first time her movies have been Oscar-nominated, which served as a further boost to her impressive career. Awkwafina most notably starred in Shang Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings which was in the running for Best Visual Effects. Other than that, she also voiced Sisu in Raya and the Last Dragon, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature.
Timothée Chalamet
At a young age, Timothée Chalamet’s movie career is already enviable for the most accomplished of actors. He’s starred in many Oscar-nominated movies, from the likes of Little Women to Call Me By Your Name. There’s no doubt Chalamet has a knack for choosing roles since nearly every film he’s been in has been a success. Once again, Chalamet was a strong presence in Oscar nominated movies of 2022. He was the star of the epic Dune and also played a comedic supporting role in the star-studded Netflix movie Don’t Look Up, both of which were nominated for Best Picture.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett is not new to the Oscars, as she’s been nominated seven times in her career so far for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. She won an Oscar once for her portrayal of Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator and was nominated again in 2023 for her role in Tar. In 2022, Blanchett was in two Oscar-nominated movies that were both in the running for Best Picture. Blanchett starred in Nightmare Alley and also played a role in Don’t Look Up. Her characters in each film were so vastly different, fans might not even realize she was in both.
Benedict Cumberbatch
Benedict Cumberbatch is an accomplished actor, having won a Primetime Emmy Award and appearing in many Oscar-nominated films. He’s proved himself by starring in many different roles in plenty of genres. Benedict Cumberbatch starred in The Power of the Dog, which was nominated for Best Picture. He also returned to the MCU as Doctor Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was nominated in the visual effects category. On top of that, he was nominated for Best Actor for his work on The Power of the Dog, his second time receiving a nomination in that category. However, he lost the award to Will Smith in King Richard.
J.K. Simmons
J.K. Simmons has been in many successful movies throughout his impressive and lengthy career. He also won an Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in Whiplash. In 2022, J.K. Simmons has found himself nominated for Best Supporting Actor yet again, this time for the movie Being the Ricardos. He also notably appeared in the Oscar-nominated blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home, reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson which he originated in Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies.
