Chris Hemsworth returns as the God of Thunder in a Thor 5 fan poster, which imagines the possible Marvel Cinematic Universe movie with a much darker tone than what the Thor franchise has seen in recent years. Last year’s Thor: Love and Thunder failed to recreate the success of Hemsworth’s third solo film, Thor: Ragnarok. Thor: Love and Thunder‘s humor failure, with the film being criticized for undercutting serious moments with unnecessary comedy, has led to uncertainty regarding Thor’s MCU future. A course-correct for the hero, much like Thor: Ragnarok, might be what is needed.
On Instagram, artist @marvels.wolverine imagined Thor 5‘s story with a darker tone through a stunning fan poster, with Hemsworth’s possible new movie being titled Thor: Protector of Midgard.
Director Taika Waititi is one of the best in balancing comedy and drama on the big screen, which he did perfectly in Thor: Ragnarok; however, Thor: Love and Thunder seemed to not know where to draw the line between the two genres, creating a messy movie with a series of disjointed tonal shifts. Whenever Hemsworth returns as Thor, that issue will have to be solved.
What To Expect From Thor’s MCU Future
Hemsworth’s journey as Thor is not over yet, with the character having at least a couple of storylines set up for his MCU future by Thor: Love and Thunder‘s ending. One of the movie’s post-credits scenes revealed that Zeus was sending his son Hercules — played by Ted Lasso‘s Roy Kent actor, Brett Goldstein — after Thor to get revenge for the God of Thunder stealing Zeus’ famous lightning bolt and hitting him with it. An eventual Thor 5 would likely address that story, as the arc would not suit any of the MCU’s already-announced entries.
Thor 5 would also have to include Love, played by Hemsworth’s young daughter, who is actually the daughter of Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder. The end of the film saw Thor and Love share a father-daughter relationship in their home, with both then going out to fight bad guys together. Thor 5 would need to address the major plot point of Thor now having a daughter and how that changes the character. Jane Foster still needs to come back to life as well, which should factor into Thor 5.
Hemsworth has teased Thor’s death with his comments about the character’s future in the MCU. According to the actor, the next time Thor appears in the MCU would “have to close the book” on the character. Given how two of his fellow Avengers — Iron Man and Black Widow — have left the MCU, there is a decent chance Thor might be killed. With two Avengers movies in the horizon, Marvel could make a deal with Hemsworth to reprise his role for Thor 5, closing the stories teased by the hero’s previous movie while giving him a definitive ending in either of the two upcoming Avengers films.
