The Scream franchise’s Jasmin Savoy Brown weighs in on whether one of the Core Four will ever be killed off. The latest installment, Scream 6, continued shifting the focus away from the franchise’s legacy characters and onto the new self-described Core Four – Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad – as they are targeted by a new Ghostface killer in New York City. Brown plays Mindy, the twin sister of Chad who, just like her uncle Randy Meeks, is a horror fanatic who uses her knowledge of slasher movies to help uncover the killer’s identity and motive.
During a recent interview with Comic Book, Brown was asked whether the Scream franchise would ever kill off one of the new Core Four characters. The actor says that, while it will be “devastating,” it is bound to happen at some point given the nature of the slasher franchise. She just hopes it isn’t Mindy who is killed first. Read what Brown shared below:
Well, it would be devastating, which is why it’s going to happen at some point. That’s the way these franchises go. [David Arquette’s] Dewey passed, given, it wasn’t until five movies in, but he did. I think it’s inevitable, but I’m just so curious who it would be and how and why. It’s amazing Chad didn’t die, considering that man was basically gutted. Oh, my God, that was insane, I can’t get that image out of my head. I hope it’s not Mindy, I hope Mindy doesn’t go first.
Will The Scream Franchise Actually Kill One Of The Core Four?
The Scream 6 ending set up the Core Four characters as the future of the franchise, so if one of them were to be killed off in the still-announced Scream 7, it would be devastating for audiences and the three remaining characters. In its past two installments, the Scream franchise has flirted with killing off one of the Core Four, with Mindy suffering significant injuries at the hands of Ghostface. Chad appeared to be killed off when he was gutted by the two Ghostfaces during Scream 6‘s final moments, only to miraculously survive.
If the Scream franchise wants to maintain its genuine stakes and sense of danger, it’s going to have to do better than fake-out deaths and actually commit to killing off one of the Core Four. Scream (2022) killed off one of the franchise’s most important legacy characters, Dewey Riley, but that was after he survived for four movies. Scream 6 still seemed reluctant to kill off Gale Weathers. If the Scream franchise ever does kill one of the Core Four, it likely won’t be until two or three films down the line.
