Fast X star Jason Momoa explains the inspiration for character Dante Reyes’ wardrobe. Fast X will see Dominic Toretto face the most dangerous threat he has ever gone up against: Dante Reye. The son of Hernan Reyes from Fast Five, Dante, is after Dominic Toretto to avenge the death of his father and the loss of their family fortune.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for Fast X, Momoa discussed Dante’s wardrobe. He revealed that he played a big part in choosing Dante’s colorful costumes, being “inspired by pastel colors.” Momoa also teased how the wardrobe is meant to seem inviting, but that isn’t the true Dante. Jason Momoa: I really built a lot of this wardrobe with a costume designer, but I just had a lot of ideas [about] what I wanted.
I really was inspired by pastel colors. I wanted something that was warm and inviting. And then when you got close to him, you were just like, “That’s the devil, and the devil tricked me.” That was kind of the whole idea.
How Jason Momoa’s Outfits Enhance His Fast X Character
In Fast X, Dante is the complete opposite of Dominic, which begins with his appearance. Bright colors and long hair make the antagonist stand out and seem less threatening initially. However, Momoa seems to have chosen his wardrobe with that in mind. This false sense of charisma and security likely becomes even more terrifying when his true colors are shown.
By wearing bright and pastel colors, Momoa shows a different type of male antagonist for Dominic to face, who has primarily fallen into the macho stereotype. Momoa’s wardrobe elevates his performance because it immediately goes against the expectations that the Fast and the Furious franchise has set. It also allows Momoa to play with the role, making the unhinged elements of the character seem even more chilling because his wardrobe isn’t how the typical villain appears.
Fast X introduced a new type of enemy for Dominic Toretto to face off against: Dante Reyes. His flashy clothes and car are meant to draw the heroes in by either confusing them or making them believe he won’t be difficult to defeat. However, they also lean into the opposite, making it clear that his thirst for vengeance is unquenchable. Momoa’s description of Dante Reyes, “That’s the devil, and the devil tricked me,” perfectly encapsulates what makes his wardrobe and acting choices in Fast X so strong.
