Who is Father Gabriele Amorth?
Gabriele Amorth was an Italian Catholic priest, born in 1925, who served as the exorcist for the Diocese of Rome. Amorth worked closely with five other priests to found what is known as the International Association of Exorcists. Amorth is said to have conducted over 60,000 exorcisms before his death in 2016 and strongly believed that both Hitler and Stalin were possessed by the Devil.
Amorth describes in his biography, An Exorcist Tells His Story, that an exorcism is “an individual prayer or ritual ranging anywhere from a ‘few minutes’ to many hours in length. Only through the exorcism itself can we determine with influence whether there is a satanic influence.”
The movie is actually inspired by the real files of Father Gabriele Amorth. Some changes were made to his actual account, but many of the things that unfold on screen are pulled straight from the pages of the files, which included Amorth’s thoughts and feelings in a raw and personal manner. This allows viewers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of Amorth’s mind and his day-to-day life.
