Arnold Schwarzenegger says the planned Twins sequel Triplets with Danny DeVito is dead, and he blames Jason Reitman. Schwarzenegger was the biggest action star on the planet when he made Twins, the 1988 comedy teaming the former Mr. Universe and DeVito as unlikely brothers. Three decades after Twins proved Schwarzenegger could make a comedy blockbuster, plans were finally put in place to craft a long-awaited sequel, with Tracy Morgan joining the party as the original stars’ improbable other brother.
Now it seems audiences will never get to see the comedy team of Schwarzenegger, DeVito and Morgan, as Twins 2 looks to be dead. In a new profile for THR ahead of the release of his Netflix show FUBAR, Schwarzenegger gets candid about what happened to Triplets, and takes no prisoners when it comes to fingering the culprit in the project’s cancelation. Check out what Schwarzenegger said in the space below:
Jason Reitman f–ked it up! Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died. His father wanted to do it really badly. I wanted to do it really badly. Danny DeVito wanted to do it really badly. We had the financing. When his father passed away, Jason says, “I never liked the idea” and put a hold on it. I’m developing another movie with Danny; he’s so much fun to work with and so talented.
Triplets Went Through A Long And Difficult Development
Solid reports about Schwarzenegger and DeVito reuniting for Triplets date back to 2012, when Josh Gad and Ryan Dixon were reported to be writing the script. It wasn’t until 2018 that Schwarzenegger offered a significant update on the project, revealing that Eddie Murphy was to be cast as the brother of the original movies’ two stars. In 2021, Morgan was unveiled as the third lead instead of Murphy, and things got far enough along for a clip characterized as Triplets BTS video to emerge showing Schwarzenegger playing a prank on his co-star DeVito.
The death of Triplets director Ivan Reitman in 2022 obviously represented a significant setback for the production, but Schwarzenegger nevertheless quickly assured that the project was set to continue with a new director, telling the crowd at an event that the film would begin shooting in October 2022. But somewhere in that span, Reitman’s writer-director son seems to have axed the entire idea, apparently bringing an end to Twins 2’s decade-long development process.
It’s yet to be seen whether Schwarzenegger can somehow revive Triplets despite the younger Reitman’s reservations about the idea, but at least he seems to be developing something new with his would-be Triplets co-star DeVito, keeping alive the possibility of a long-awaited reunion between the two beloved actors. Sadly, it seems audiences will never get to see what wackiness the original Twins team plus the always-hilarious Morgan had in store for them with Triplets.
