Richard Evans died after Crockett Marcel used OR 2.0 to operate on him in Chicago Med season 8, episode 20, but another character might be to blame for the cancer patient’s death. OR 2.0 is an advanced surgery unit that has been in the works for years, and Richard was the first person that Gaffney Chicago Medical Center used OR 2.0 on. The first procedure successfully removed a tumor that doctors previously determined to be inoperable, and Richard seemed to be in the clear.
Unfortunately, Marcel and Will Halstead discovered that Richard’s cancer had returned and spread to his liver in episode 20. But the doctors believed they could use OR 2.0 to save his life a second time, which seemed to be good news at the time. After the surgery, though, Richard didn’t wake up because of a stroke, and he died. The turn of events was shocking, given the success of his first OR 2.0 operation. But after recounting the moments leading up to Richard’s second surgery and the slight malfunction during, Chicago Med‘s latest villain could be behind his death — Jack Dayton.
Richard Evans Died In Chicago Med Season 8
Marcel performed Richard’s surgery in Chicago Med season 8, episode 20, and OR 2.0 seemed to glitch during the operation. It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but it became even more relevant when Richard died. After Marcel ablated the first lesion, he asked the unit to guide him to another one, and it took longer than it should have to calculate his next steps.
It’s also important to note that Marcel, Halstead, and Sharon Goodwin fought to be able to use OR 2.0 on Richard. After Gaffney became a for-profit hospital, a rich donor reserved OR 2.0, even though they wouldn’t be in town to use it. So Sharon approved Richard’s surgery, which undoubtedly ruffled some feathers. Jack Dayton is the mastermind behind Chicago Med‘s for-profit decision, which has been controversial, to say the least. It’s possible that Dayton caught wind of the pro bono operation and took matters into his own hands. Dayton sabotaging OR 2.0, and therefore killing a patient, would be one of the most dramatic storylines the show has ever done. But given Chicago Med‘s past and Dayton’s character, it also wouldn’t be surprising.
Dayton Looks Suspicious When Confronted
Following Richard’s death in Chicago Med season 8, episode 20, the doctors were baffled and saddened, but none suspected foul play. However, that will change in episode 21. The preview for season 8’s penultimate hour, which airs on Wednesday, May 17, shows Marcel investigating what happened to Richard. As he digs deeper into the procedure, the doctor suspects Dayton.
The trailer teases that the data from Richard’s surgery gets deleted, and Marcel confronts Dayton about the problem. Dayton tells Marcel to “let it go” and warns him not to “blow up your career over this.” So it’s looking like the CEO had something to do with Richard’s mysterious death. Dayton is likely covering up an issue with OR 2.0, or he directly tampered with the surgery unit. Whatever the case may be, Chicago Med season 8, episode 21 is bound to be shocking and thrilling.
