Wednesday and Enid’s friendship in Wednesday season 1 has the shippers coming out in full force, but a romance between the two quirky characters would be a terrible idea. You can’t get much different than these two Nevermore roommates, and their contradictory personalities are precisely what makes them such a good fit. Wednesday is full of doom and gloom, while Enid is a colorful ball of sunshine. These qualities allow them to complement each other in all the right ways, making them prime targets for shipping fan fiction and fan art. However, a romance would risk ruining their perfect Wednesday season 1 dynamic.
Netflix’s Wednesday has put a modern twist on the classic Addams Family characters, which means the titular daughter of Gomez and Morticia is a far more typical teenager than her traditional counterparts. This meant a little romantic exploration in season 1, including a first kiss with Tyler. Of course, Wednesday’s romantic prospects fell apart when Tyler was revealed to be the Hyde, so the finale saw her lean into her friendships with Eugene, Xavier, and Enid instead. Still, this hasn’t stopped fans from hoping that Wednesday’s next romance will be with her bubbly roommate, but that might not be the best direction for Wednesday season 2.
Wednesday & Enid’s Dynamic Is Perfect For A Friendship (Not Romance)
Wednesday was reluctant to warm up to Enid in Wednesday season 1, but it ultimately didn’t take her long to find herself friends with her roommate. This came down to the werewolf’s ability to see past the uncaring facade that Wednesday prides herself in. Despite her bubbly disposition, Enid has a rather no-nonsense way of dealing with people, so when Wednesday is rude, her colorful friend calls her out on it and demands an apology. Ultimately, both characters are strong and fierce in their own way. They bring out each other’s strengths while balancing out their faults.
This dynamic makes Wednesday and Enid easy to cheer for as friends, but as a romance, it’s hard to imagine things working out. Both characters are strong and stubborn, which often results in disagreements. As plutonic companions, it’s perfectly reasonable for them to make each other mad, move out of the dorm, and come back after they had some time to cool off. However, this would be a somewhat toxic dynamic in a romantic relationship. The balance just wouldn’t be the same. So, if Wednesday and Enid were to start a romance in Wednesday season 2, the fun friendship they developed in season 1 would be out the window.
Jenna Ortega Hints At Less Romance For Wednesday Season 2
Another reason that Wednesday and Enid shouldn’t get together in Wednesday is that the romances in season 1 were among the worst parts of the plot. The love triangle between Wednesday, Xavier, and Tyler contradicted everything audiences know about the Addams Family character, and it distracted from the delightful horror and mystery of it all. Thankfully, Wednesday season 2 will take a different direction since actor (and now executive producer) Jenna Ortega has shared (via Insider) that new episodes will focus less on romance and more on friendships.
This is bad news for shippers but good news for Wednesday’s character. If the series’ focus is going to switch to themes of friendship, then it seems even less likely that Wednesday and Enid’s connection would evolve into anything romantic. Since Wednesday had a tendency for selfishness in Wednesday season 1, this more profound exploration of friendship—likely with the help of Enid—can help her grow into a better version of herself. Ultimately, this will probably be their role in each other’s lives, which would make for a far better Wednesday ending than another forced romance.
