Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for the Night Court season 1 finaleThe original Night Court star who cameoed in the reboot’s finale will return for season 2. Debuting in January on NBC, the return of Night Court is headlined by Big Bang Theory alum Melissa Rauch in the role of Judge Abby Stone, the daughter of the late Harry Stone from the original series. She is joined by Dan Fielding (the returning John Larroquette), who reluctantly accepts Abby’s offer to become a public defender. The show, which also stars India de Beaufort, Lacretta, and Kapil Talwalkar, has mostly focused on pairing Larroquette with new characters. But the sitcom’s most recent episode offered a nice surprise.
In an interview with TVLine, surprise guest Marsha Warfield opened up about joining the Night Court cast for the season 1 finale and reprising her role as Roz from the original series. In her quote, which is included below, Warfield confirms that Roz will be back in a guest capacity for the already-renewed Night Court season 2. She also shares more details about what to expect from her character:
“We find out why she went to jail in the first place, get to catch up with her for a little bit… some of the things she’s done in her past and is doing now. Then she gets to spend some time with an old friend. If they ask for more, I’m hopefully available, and I would love to do it.”
How Did Night Court Bring Back Roz?
In the closing scene of Night Court season 1, and as the credits roll, Dan has accepted a job in Louisiana. He finds out that his first defendant is Roz. Dan’s happy to see her, but she seems less than thrilled. “They made you a judge?!” She exclaims, asking to be taken back to jail rather than appear before Judge Fielding. The judge himself, though, appears to be amused by the whole encounter.
It’s unclear if Dan will remain in Louisiana, away from the rest of the characters. His decision to take the new job is an emotional one, which runs through the Night Court season 1 finale. It’s possible that Roz will be the nudge that Dan needs to help him realize he’d prefer to be closer to Abby or it’s possible that the reboot could commit to its bifurcated setup for longer than anticipated.
Night Court season 2 is one of the shows affected by the WGA striking for fair pay. At this time, like many other productions, it’s unclear when the comedy will be back on NBC. But, when it does, viewers should hopefully expect to see more of Warfield and Larroquette sharing the screen as Roz and Dan.
