Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Warning: SPOILERS for the Ragnarok season 2 finale.

Here are the latest Ragnarok season 3 updates, including everything that’s known about its possible cancellation, renewal, release date, and story details. Not to be confused with Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, Netflix’s Norwegian fantasy series Ragnarok released its second season in May 2021, which continued to follow awkward teen Magne’s coming-of-age story as an incarnation of Thor. Ragnarok blends high school melodrama with environmental crisis and Norse mythology. In the fictional small town of Edda, Norway, giants, or more specifically, the Jutul family, reigns supreme, destroying anyone who investigates the seedy underbelly of their company.

In season 2, Magne (David Stakston) struggles with his new mantle as Thor and the impending war between gods and giants. New teenage gods make themselves known in town as the End Times draw closer. After an explosive season 2 finale, Ragnarok fans are eager to see how Magne and his half-brother, Laurits, of the Ragnarok cast, go head-to-head with the Jutuls. Now that the divide and tension are ramping up between them, Ragnarok season 3 should culminate in the final battle, and will be the last installment to the series. Here are the latest Ragnarok season 3 updates in regards to cast, story, release date, and more.

The Latest Ragnarok Season 3 News

Netflix Ragnarok Magne lifting Thor's hammer

While there aren’t a ton of Ragnarok season 3 updates to go around, a moment in season 2 may have teased a separate Norse mythology subplot that could see Magne’s Thor as a father. During the Ragnarok season 2 finale, Magne and Saxa are fighting, which soon leads to the two having sex. Saxa is most likely meant to represent the giant Járnsaxa, who carries on a relationship with Thor, despite the two being enemies, and they sire a child together, Magni. In Norse mythology, Magni survives Ragnarok and assists his father in defeating a giant.

It’s possible that Ragnarok season 3 could see Saxa pregnant. However, this is pure speculation. The latest Ragnarok season 3 updates claim that the third chapter will be the final of the series, so it’s possible that this is a storyline that was started and then axed when it was revealed that the show wouldn’t go on any longer. On the other hand, Ragnarok could end with Saxa being pregnant, if studios choose to bring this piece of Norse mythology to the screen. It would cause an interesting dynamic between Magne, Saxa, and Signy to close out the show.

Ragnarok Season 3 Has Been Confirmed

The latest Ragnarok season 3 updates confirm that Netflix has greenlit Ragnarok for a third, and final, installment. Herman Tømmeraas, who plays the giant Fjor, also confirmed Ragnarok season 3’s renewal on Twitter and Instagram in November 2021. Netflix usually waits a few weeks before announcing season renewals, but, due to the pandemic and other factors, it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility it took months for Ragnarok season 3 to receive the go-ahead. While critical reviews have been less than stellar for the series, the decision to renew likely came down to how Netflix measures its viewers.

Ragnarok Season 3 Release Date

Currently, the latest Ragnarok season 3 updates don’t include a release date. Judging by the COVID-related delays for season 2 — the first season released in January 2020, and the most current season debuted nearly a year and a half later — viewers likely won’t see Ragnarok season 3 until late 2023 or possibly even 2024. Hopefully, with COVID restrictions lifting somewhat, production has begun or will be starting up shortly. Like its previous seasons, Ragnarok season 3 will probably have six episodes in its roster, and all main players and recurring characters should return as well.

Ragnarok Season 3 Cast

Ragnarok season 3 will likely bring back all of the gods and giants it has introduced and follow what the second season has been building up to, specifically Ragnarok, by which the show is titled. Ragnarok season 3 updates confirm that Magne (David Stakston) and his half-brother Laurits (Jonas Strand Gravli) will reprise their roles for the final installment. Gods Harry (Benjamin Helstad), Iman (Danu Sunth), and Wotan (Bjørn Sundquist) should be back to join in the final battle, along with Saxa (Theresa Frostad Eggesbø), who finally sided with Magne in season 2.

The Jutul family may be without Vidar (Gísli Örn Garðarsson) in season 3, but Ran (Synnøve Macody Lund) and Fjor (Herman Tømmeraas) will assuredly return for their epic fight against Magne. There’s also the possibility of new characters being introduced, however, there are no Ragnarok season 3 updates regarding this. There are tons of avenues of Norse mythology left for Ragnarok season 3 to explore, meaning that the show could see new gods and giants. However, this will be the penultimate season of the series, meaning showrunners could be more focused on closing out the show than adding in more subplots with extra characters.

Ragnarok Season 3 Story

Ragnarok season 3 updates don’t mention a ton of plot details, but some story beats can be predicted based on the season 2 ending. Now that Laurits, or Loki, is comfortable as his own unique self — both as Norse mythology’s trickster god and a giant — he should be a valuable ally in the fight against the giants. In addition, Saxa has now officially changed sides, so it’ll be interesting to see how her changing loyalties have affected the Jutul.

Magne has finally forged Mjölnir and regained his powers after surrendering them to be normal. Fjor left the Jutuls to pursue a relationship with a human and has now returned in his father’s stead. The third season will probably feature more of the serpent that Laurits birthed, diagnosed as a tapeworm that seems more a Jörmungandr incarnation, Loki’s gigantic serpent, and Thor’s archenemy of Norse mythology. Since Ragnarok season 3 is the last one, showrunners will want the series to go out with a bang, so there are sure to be a ton of action-packed fight sequences throughout the chapter.

Ragnarok Season 3 Trailer

Unfortunately, Ragnarok season 3 updates don’t include a trailer. The show finished principal photography in August of 2022, beginning its production schedule in April of 2022. This makes a 2023 release date highly likely, though no release window has been provided as of yet. Promotional footage and behind-the-scenes images should see the light of day relatively soon, and it’s possible that when a release window is given, a trailer will be dropped as well.
