Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Goldbergs, season 10, episode 22.In The Goldbergs series finale, Adam finally let his mother Beverly move on with her life, allowing her to do the same for him. When The Goldbergs began in 2013, Beverly’s relationship with her youngest son Adam was adorable if a little over-protective. While Beverly might have been a bit smothering, Adam always appreciated her support despite how much it occasionally embarrassed him. However, as The Goldbergs continued and Adam grew up, the dynamic between him and his mother grew increasingly strange. It was believable that Beverly would look out for her teenage son, but less reasonable that she would meddle in his love life when he was 20.
Despite this, meddling in Adam’s love life is just what Beverly continued to do, alongside some pretty major privacy violations. The Goldbergs season 10 brought back Adam’s ex-girlfriends in the show’s penultimate episode to illustrate how much this had impacted Adam, and the outing did not make Adam and Beverly’s dynamic seem healthy. As such, Bev promised to stop interfering in her son’s personal affairs in The Goldbergs season 10, episode 21, “Push It.” However, Adam made no such promise to steer clear of his mother’s business. Fortunately, this was addressed in The Goldbergs series finale.
The Goldbergs Ended Beverly and Adam’s Weird Dynamic
For the longest time, it seemed like Beverly couldn’t let Adam grow up. However, The Goldbergs season 10, episode 22, “Bev to the Future,” proved that Adam was part of the problem and saw the pair finally move on. For years, Adam yearned for more independence but, when Beverly began flirting with an old flame George at her high school reunion, he was horrified by the thought of her being with anyone other than his late father. However, The Goldbergs series finale fixed this when Adam accepted that Beverly had moved on and invited her ex over for a party the next day.
While The Goldbergs series finale didn’t solve every unanswered mystery from the series, the outing did provide some closure for long-time fans of the family sitcom. The dynamic between Beverly and Adam has defined many of the show’s best episodes. Since Adam is the narrator, his mother’s involvement in his life has been one of the biggest themes in The Goldbergs throughout the series. As a result, ending the show without addressing how the pair navigated this tricky emotional territory going forward would have felt like a letdown. Luckily, The Goldbergs series finale proved that Adam and Beverly could remain close while respecting each other’s boundaries.
The Goldbergs Series Finale Was Perfectly Timed
Adam and Beverly’s sometimes uncomfortably close dynamic was pivotal to the story of The Goldbergs, but it kept both characters from growing as individuals. As such, The Goldbergs series finale was the perfect time for the pair to give each other some space. It was a shame that The Goldbergs season 10 wasted Bev’s singledom after Murray’s death, but it made sense that Adam would accept the presence of her new beau in the show’s final outing. Without Adam and Beverly’s too-close dynamic, the show wouldn’t have had most of its conflicts but, with Adam heading off to college, The Goldbergs series finale was the perfect time to break this weird cycle.
