Sony’s new romantic dramedy Love Again isn’t an original story, but is it based on a couple’s true experiences? Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan, Love Again follows Mira Ray as she struggles to cope with her fiancé’s death, leading her to send romantic texts to his old phone number, which happens to be the new number assigned to journalist Rob Burns. When Rob is assigned to a piece about singer Celine Dion, he asks the Grammy winner for advice on how to meet Mira and win her over.
With several new songs performed by Celine Dion on the soundtrack, the modern tale of Love Again‘s characters kicks off the summer rom-com season with an epic love story. The film is directed and written by Grace Is Gone’s James C. Strouse, though the 2023 rom-com isn’t a brand-new story. Love Again’s accessible premise and presence of real-life singer Celine Dion suggests that it could have been derived from a real tale, which may lead audiences to wonder whether the romantic saga between Mira and Rob is based on a true story.
Love Again Is Not Based On A True Story
The theatrically-released May 2023 movie is not based on a true story. While some notable romantic movies like The Vow, 50 First Dates, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and The Big Sick are based on true stories, Love Again isn’t an adaptation of the love story of two real people. Still, Love Again isn’t a new romantic premise, as the story has already been adapted to the big screen from a popular 2009 novel.
Love Again Is A Remake Of A German Book Adaptation
Love Again is an English-language remake of the 2016 German romantic drama SMS für Dich, which loosely translates to Text for You (via Deadline). This version of the story didn’t include famous singer Celine Dion, but shared the same basic premise of a journalist receiving romantic texts from a woman grieving her deceased boyfriend. The German movie was written and directed by Karoline Herfurth, who also starred as the female romantic lead, Clara.
While Love Again is a remake of the 2016 movie, both are adapted from the 2009 German novel SMS für Dich by Sofie Cramer. The book similarly follows Clara, who sends romantic text messages to her deceased fiancé’s phone number two years after his tragic death. Nearby, Sven begins receiving the texts and is intrigued by the sender, deciding that he’ll seek out the mysterious texter. Love Again’s biggest change to the original book’s story is certainly the inclusion of Celine Dion, whose influence and powerful love ballads elevate Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan’s 2023 movie adaptation.
