Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle addresses whether season 3 could end the series. The fantasy drama, based on the comic book of the same name by Jeff Lemire, struck a chord when it debuted in June 2021. With the recent release of Sweet Tooth season 2, and an eventful closing episode, there are a lot of questions about how the Emmy-winning adaptation will ultimately choose to conclude its run if it gets the chance.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Mickle was asked about the future of Sweet Tooth and whether the fantasy drama could return for a third installment, which could be the last. Mickle strikes a hopeful tone about Sweet Tooth season 3. He also talks about whether he’s aiming for an ending that’s similar to the original Lemire comics or if he’s more interested in following the direction of the 2020 sequel Sweet Tooth: The Return. Mickle’s quote is below:
“I mean, both really. Because I love both of those, but I think, I love the Arctic story. That was a big part. And in the comic book, I love that, and John Carpenter’s The Thing is my favorite movie, and I love stories that take place there. So I would absolutely, absolutely love to do that. And I love when the comic opens and suddenly you’re on the ship with those guys and Thacker and all that. So I love that kind of stuff…I love where the comic book goes, and I think the beauty is that, again, it’s like we can kind of use the backbones of those things and we can use the big story points for those things. And obviously there’s some mythology that we’ve created in history and all that we’ve created that does jive with that. And that’s kind of the beauty of mixing all that stuff together. So yeah, let’s hope that season 2 does well.”
What To Expect From Sweet Tooth Season 3
Sweet Tooth season 2 was released on April 27. Given its recency, Netflix has yet to announce a decision regarding its future. But continuing from the Sweet Tooth season 2 ending, a potential third installment could focus on an expanded role of Birdie (Amy Seimetz), the mother of Gus (Christian Convery). The young hero has been on a search for Birdie, which will likely be a greater focal point moving forward.
In the finale, “The Ballad of the Last Men”, Gus dreams of being led to a cave where his mother is. He finds her next to a fire, asking for his help. Once he wakes up, the young hero is even more convinced that he’ll be able to find his mom. He remains determined, even upon learning that Birdie was intentionally staying away to keep him safe. There are also several other plots to build on after the eventful Sweet Tooth season 2 ending, such as introducing a new central antagonist and examining the potential new abilities that Gus has.
It’s too early to say whether the show will be back. But if it is, going off Mickle’s comments, it doesn’t sound like there’s a desire to keep Sweet Tooth open-ended. That’s a positive for those that have invested in the story of Gus, his friends, and the strange and occasionally very dangerous world they live in. But allowing for some intrigue, the details of that ending have yet to be filled in.
